Spartans take third in tough conditions at home shoot

AFTON — The Southwestern sports shooting team captured the third-place trophy in its home shooting Oct. 7 at the High Lakes Outdoor Alliance Shooting Range north of Afton.

Leading the way for the Spartans was freshman Tom Steinbach of Creston, hitting 95 of 100 targets. Other top scores for Southwestern were by freshman Dillon Glenn of Bethany, Missouri (93), freshman Blake Binns of Winterset (92), sophomore Cole Harder of Hancock (92) and sophomore Hunter Albers of Indianola (90).

Placings for high individual men in the competition were Steinbach in 10th, Glenn 17th, Binns 22nd, Harder 24th and Albers 31st.

High individual women for Southwestern were sophomore Jessica Aupperle of Wiota, ninth; sophomore Sydney McElfish of Greenfield, 13th; freshman Mallory Bell of Colfax, 14th; and freshman Makayla Flora of Adel, 15th.

SWCC coach Marc Roberg said he was encouraged by the team’s performance in the windy and rainy conditions,which made for tough shooting conditions.

“We are improving each meet,” Roberg said. “We ended up seventh in our first meet, fifth in the second and now finishing third in our home meet. We are headed in the right direction.”

Next outing for the Spartans will be Oct. 21 in Cedar Rapids, hosted by Kirkwood Community College.
