Update 12:57 p.m. Saturday: Coach James Hardy was discharged from Decatur County Hospital Saturday morning. A case of the flu and dehydration led to his collapse. Coach Craig Ditzler confirmed Hardy is doing OK.
LAMONI — Friday's thrilling conclusion to East Union's 28-22 road win on Graceland's Huntsman Field over Lamoni wasn't celebrated long as EU co-coach James Hardy was treated by emergency first responders after collapsing to the turf on the game's final play.
Hardy seemed slightly responsive while attended to by a group of people who came out of the stands and law enforcement personnel.
Several eyewitnesses to the situation say he collapsed during or just after the game's final play. The Eagles and Demons laid in wait while Hardy was attendeded to. He was eventually put on a backboard, aware of his location and the scene around him and transported to Decatur County Hospital.
East Union player Matt McGuire shared this update on Twitter at 11:55 p.m.
"Update: he is okay in the hospital. Not sure what happened, they are doing more tests. Just a little dehydrated they noticed."
Tests were being run on Hardy during the evening this was written.
Things were intense toward the end of the game.
East Union's Sanden Cheers restarted the Eagles' engine late in the fourth quarter after the Eagles fell behind 22-14 late.
Cheers ran a kick back inside of the Lamoni 10-yard line, scored a touchdown on a sneak play, and ran a bootleg away from a three-receiver set to score the tying points that sent the game into overtime.
East Union picked up a defensive stop and Matthew Wittstock ripped his way up the Demons defense for the winning score.
More on Hardy's condition and the Eagle win will be in Monday's News Advertiser.
