Saunderson leads Spartans in final fall meets

The Southwestern Community College golf team hosted its second tournament of the 2017-18 season Oct. 5-6 at Mozingo Lake Golf Course in Maryville, Missouri.

The Spartan men finished sixth place with a score of 318-313 — 631. Iowa Lakes and Fontbonne University were just one strike better in a fourth-place tie and North Central Missouri took third at 626.

“The theme of this fall has been starting and closing,” said Spartan coach Doug North. “We are five strokes away from a third-place finish and we have to realize we are never out of it.”

Park University swept the podium with a team score of 595 and three of the top five individual finishers on the men’s side. They had the same success on the women’s side, taking the top six individual finishes and the team trophy.

The Spartans were led by freshman Reinhardt Saunderson in a tie for sixth place individually at a 7-over par score of 75-76 — 151.

“Reinhardt has really come on the second half of our fall season,” North said. “He has demonstrated his leadership ability again by leading the team by 10 strokes.”

Hayley Osmun was the lone Spartan woman to compete as injuries and academic commitments kept a few players at home.

“Hayley really had some great holes,” North said. “She is young and going through some learning pains. This off-season will do her well. She can do some great things for the Spartans.”

The Spartan men finished the fall

season in its toughest test of the season at the Bent Tree Intercollegiate hosted by Iowa Western Community College Oct. 9-10 in Council Bluffs.

The top-flight field included NJCAA Division I top-ranked Indian Hills, fourth-ranked Iowa Western, No. 6 Hutchinson and Division II eighth-ranked Southeast.

The Spartans took fifth in the six-team field with a score of 325-325 — 650 and finished just eight strokes behind eighth-ranked Southeast Community College. Southwestern was the only team that did not shoot worse in the much colder and windier second-round conditions on Tuesday.

Indian Hills shot 12-over par as a team at 292-296 — 588 to take the team title.

The Spartans were led by Saunderson in a tie for 16th place at 14-over par 76-82 — 158. Bellevue University’s Fernando Arzate was the medalist with a 1-over score of 74-71 — 145.
