John ”Jack” Dobberthein, 78, of Thayer died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017, at Afton Care Center in Afton.

Celebration of life services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., in Afton. The Rev. Ken Halbur will officiate. Burial will be in Murray Cemetery in Murray with full military honors provided by William Lochery American Legion Post No. 405 of Murray. Open visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, with family present from 4 to 6 p.m. with a prayer service at 6 p.m. at the funeral home in Afton. Memorials are to the family. John Henry “Jack” Dobberthein, son of Kathryn Elizabeth (Sweeney) and Oliver James Dobberthein, was born Jan. 20, 1939, in Clive. Jack attended Clive Community Schools. Jack served his country as a part of the United States Navy. After leaving the Navy, Jack settled in El Paso, Texas, before returning to Des Moines for a short time. Jack worked as a heavy equipment operator. Jack moved to Thayer in 1979, where he continued to work as a heavy equipment operator working for McAnitch Road Construction Company.

On May 23, 1998, Jack married Donna Marie Main in Thayer. Jack later worked for Elder Road Construction for 15 years until his retirement in 2004.

Jack was a member of the Teamster Local 234 for 47 years and Lakeshore Golf and Country Club.

Jack is survived by his wife Donna Dobberthein of Thayer; three stepdaughters, Tena (Duane) Smith of Woodburn, Teresa Main of Osceola and Terry Main of Grand River; brother Larry (Judy) Dobberthein of Melrose; sisters, Shirley Cook of Des Moines and Mary Deragaski of Canutillo, Texas; seven step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Jackie Sue Monroe in 2015; brothers, Thomas Dobberthein in 2015 and Joseph Dobberthein; sister Barbara Cook and nephew Bill Cook.
