Get your start with Start ‘up’ UC

Union County Development Association has launched a new contest for those that want to start their own business.

“At Union County Development, we support all types of locally grown businesses. We thought this contest might be just the push that someone needs to take the next step in their business plans,” UCDA Director Wayne Pantini said. “This is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to start a business in Union County. Understanding your resources is an integral and often overlooked component to a start-up and this contest gives you access to these resources regardless of if you win or not.”

How the contest works:

• Submit your business idea on the form on the website unioncountyiowa.com

• On Oct. 25, the top seven finalists will be announced and move on

• Coaching sessions with Brandi Shay, the SBDC resource in Union County.

• Nov. 14 is the Business Pitch Competition. You will give a short presentation to a panel of judges and the winner will be announced and presented prize money.

Throughout this process, you will be coached and guided, making sure you are ready to take the next steps to make your dream a reality.

About the bracelets:

Mindy Stalker, marketing coordinator at UCDA, reached out to Blake and Baily Fry-Schnormeier about the concept of creating these unisex bracelets that could be worn to celebrate the local business. They brought in Gary Coenen at the Trophy Shop, who helped evolve the idea with our “up” symbol engraved in the center.

“We want these bracelets to be worn with the same amount of pride that a local business owner has every day they open their doors to serve you - these bracelets are a symbol of a community continuing to rise up and show support for the local business owner,” Stalker said. “These are the businesses that support local fundraisers and shop for their families in other local stores...this is what communities are built on. Showing your support for local businesses goes far beyond these bracelets, but it’s a pretty great way to show you care.”

Where can you find the bracelets:

When you make a $5 donation to the Start “Up” UC Project, you will receive a locally made bracelet.
