Middle school football: 7th grade defeats Huskies

The Creston/O-M seventh-grade football team captured its third win of the season in a defensive battle with Winterset Tuesday at Panther Field.

After a scoreless first half, Winterset scored on its first play from scrimmage in the second half. The two-point conversion failed.

Late in the third quarter, Creston/O-M”s Kyle Strider tied it at 6-6 with a 29-yard touchdown run. Strider then ran in the two-point conversion, behind blocking by Ty Morrison and Gannon Greenwalt, for the winning points in an 8-6 victory.

“The defenses for both teams were tough,” assistant coach Jerry Hartman said.

Winterset had 92 total yards and the Panthers had 91. However, the defense came up with an interception and fumble recovery while Creston/O-M had no turnovers.

Strider gained 62 yards on 15 attempts. Cade Wurster had six tackles, including two for losses.

Passing — Kyle Strider 7-10 for 44 yards.

Rushing — Strider 15-62, 1 TD; Cade Wurster 7-3; Gannon Greenwalt 2-(-3); Treyton Chesnut 4-(-7).

Receiving — Greenwalt 5-39, Ty Morrison 2-5.

Tackles (loss) — Wurster 6 (2), Chris Aragon 4 (1), George Weis 3, Greenwalt 3 (1), Austin Seaton 3 (1), Kohl Ringer 3, Morrison 2.

Returns-yards — Wurster 1-17, Strider 1-13.

The second game was a 0-0 battle with neither offense managing much momentum.

Carter Henderson led all tacklers with seven stops and a quarterback sack. Noah Felix contributed six tackles. Finishing with four each were Willie Clayton and Conner Larkin.

Gannon Greenwalt assumed quarterback duties when Kaden Street went out of the game with a suspected concussion and gained 8 yards for Creston/O-M. Owen Henderson and Street each had positive yards as well.

“It was nice for these guys to get some quality playing time today,” Hartman said. “They8 work hard every day in practice and it was fun to get them compete.”

The young Panthers finished a stretch of three games in seven days with a trip to Atlantic on Thursday.
