Middle school volleyball: 8th grade success

Creston eighth-graders won all six sets in action Sept. 12 against Mount Ayr.

“I was very happy with our first game!” Creston coach Traci Haley said. “Serving was probably our best part of the game. We struggled to get the ball up to the setter, but when we did we were able to have some success with our attacks. We have things to work on, but looking forward to a fun season!”

Creston Red won 25-20, 25-23. Brianna Fields had five kills and Halle Evans had one. Evans and Kate Foglesong each had two blocks. Gracie Hagle was 14-15 serving with eight aces, Fields was 8-10, Morgan Driskell went 5-8 with an ace, Anna Mikkelsen was 6-8 with an ace and Macy Wiley was 3-4. Driskell and Evans each had two setting assists. Fields had six digs, Mikkelsen registered four and Wiley finished with two.

Creston Black defeated Mount Ayr 25-15, 25-12. Audrey Jennings and Hagle each hit one kill and Hagle had a block. Hagle served 12-13 with eight aces, Audrey Jennings 9-12 with five aces, Aliyah Drey was 8-8 with three aces and Josie Travis went 2-4 with two aces. Jalyn Klejch and Hagle each had a setting assist. Macy Adamson and Drey each contributed two digs.

Creston White completed the sweep with a 25-17, 25-15 victory. Maria Groumoutis hit two kills. Foglesong served 16-19 with 12 aces, Mason Clayton was 4-5 with two aces and and Addyson Kerr was 3-5 with three aces. Fields provided two setting assists. Groumoutis had three digs, with one each by Clayton and Paige Waddingham.

Win over Trojans

On Sept. 14, Creston eighth-graders won five of nine sets against Atlantic.

“We didn’t play as well as we had earlier in the week,” Haley said. “We got behind early and struggled to get something going, but we dug in and came back to win a few games. Atlantic had some great servers. Some were very hard and we struggled to pass those balls up. They also attacked the ball well and we just didn’t transition well.”

Creston Red beat Atlantic 25-18, 14-25, 15-9. Hagle had three kills, Evans hit two and Fields had one. Fields and Foglesong each provided two blocks. Wiley served 8-10 with two aces, Driskell was 6-7 with two aces and Evans 10-11 with four aces. Driskell put up five assists and Evans had one. Mikkelsen hustled for four digs and Driskell had three.

Creston Black beat Atlantic 25-22, 19-25, 15-5. Jennings hit two kills and Travis had one. Jennings also had two blocks. In serving, Adamson went 6-6 with two aces, Klejch was 5-7 and Jennings finished 9-12 with three aces. Hagle and Klejch each set an assist. Travis and Drey each had two digs.

Atlantic beat Creston White 25-13, 13-25, 15-3. Groumoutis had a kill for Creston. Fields had a big serving match at 22-24 with 13 aces. Foglesong was 6-6 with one ace, Addyson Kerr was 8-10 with three aces and Klejch was 3-5 with one ace. Fields had a setting assist. Foglesong registered two digs and Clayton had one.
