Donald Howard Trost, 89, of Altoona, formerly of Lenox, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2017, at Prairie Vista Village in Altoona.

Private graveside services will be held at Lenox North Fairview Cemetery. Pearson Family Funeral Service and Cremation Center, 809 W. Montgomery St., in Creston is in charge of the arrangements. Donald, son of Joseph Carl Trost and Ruth Vera Bartrem, was born Feb. 21, 1928, on the family farm northeast of Lenox in Grant Township in Adams County. He attended the one-room country school near his home through the eighth grade and graduated from Lenox High School in 1945.

Don was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1946 where he trained in anti-aircraft artillery and earned the M-1 Expert Marksmanship Badge. As a sergeant, he served in the Allied Occupation of Japan during 1946-47 as chief clerk of G-3 Troop Control in the General Headquarters of General Douglas MacArthur in Tokyo, Japan. He has been a member of American Legion Post 250 in Lenox since his discharge.

On Sept. 25, 1949, he married Dorothy Mae Selders in Bedford. They lived in Kent for eight years from where he commuted to the farm. Don was a member of the Kent School Board, volunteer fire department and Methodist Church. After that, they moved to the farm to be closer to Lenox. He farmed for 42 years. In 1984, they moved to the town of Lenox and he subsequently retired in 1988. During his retirement, he served on Lenox First Community National Bank Board of Directors for eight years.

Don is survived by his son Dr. Donald Craig (Roberta) Trost of East Lyme, Connecticut; daughter Kim (Michael) Hilgenberg of Maxwell; grandchildren, Nicholas (Julee) Hilgenberg of Cambridge, Tawnia (Michael) Leslie of Maxwell, Jason (Astrid) Trost of Santa Monica, California, and Brian (Lucy) Trost of East Lyme, Connecticut; sister Mildred (Gerald) Reynolds of Torrence, California; nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; wife Dorothy in 2007; brothers, Raymond and Gene; and sisters, Dorothy (Howard) Poore and Margaret (Paul) Boone.
