Club news

DWF Executive Committee

The DWF Executive Committee met Thursday, Sept. 7, at First Christian Church Disciples of Christ with eight members in attendance. The meeting opened with everyone reciting the DWF prayer. The secretary’s report was read and approved. The treasurer’s report was read and approved.

Old business included a new microwave that had been purchased for the kitchen and a paper cutter for the office.

New business was the October salad luncheon which will be held 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at the church. Rebecca Circle is in charge of the guest day luncheon.

Annette Rice will be our guest. Midge will send out invitations about 10 days before the luncheon.

The scholarship program was discussed and a motion was made by Barb Jennings, seconded by Joyce Burkhead, to drop the program at this time. The motion was approved. Pat Fils turned in $42.75 for least coin. Box tops, coupons and print cartridges will continue to be collected by Irene Francis.

There were no committee reports.

The next executive committee will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, at the church.

A motion was made to adjourn the business meeting. The meeting was adjourned.

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, at the Windrow meeting room with 20 members and four guests. President-elect Korina Loudon presided, Jim Morris gave the prayer and Joe Powers was the finemaster.

The program was given by Craig Mittag. He discussed raising, judging and selling livestock. Some of the types of livestock, shows and auctions that are held and how the market is changing and involving the internet.

The Pork Chop Dinner was held Sept. 14. Dave Abiltrup gave a preliminary report about how it went, and members will know more about funds raised in the coming days as they turn in their ticket money. Members were thanked for all their help.

The Kiwanis Club “Keep a Kid Warm,” coat giveaway will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct 26, at Creston First United Methodist Church, located on the corner Elm and Howard streets.

The Christmas wreath fundraising program will be done again this year with sales in October and delivery in November. Members were handed brochures to start selling.

Karen Finn presented the club with $500 for the Mickey Finn scholarship the Kiwanis present to Creston Community High School seniors annually in the spring.

VFW Post 1797

VFW Post 1797 met Sept. 12 at the Elks Lodge in Creston with 17 members and guests present for dinner.

Commander Gary O’Daniels called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. with 17 members present.

The post draped the charter for veterans Bruce Bangert, Clell Looney, Bernard Shea and Larry Schad.

Minutes and QM reports were read and approved.

Service officers reported 10 hours for community service, 19 hours at the hospital, 64 hours for Honor Guard and four hours at the bloodmobile, for a total of 97 hours. Officers also traveled 60 miles for veterans.

In old business, an update on Union County Honor Flight was given. Vietnam books are still available at Union County Veterans Affairs Office for Vietnam veterans.

In new business, the honor flight Sept. 16 from Fort Dodge will have seven Korean veterans and one WWII veteran from Union County. There will be no Vietnam veterans on this flight.

Upcoming events were Balloon Days parade Sept. 16 and Creston Homecoming Parade Sept. 29. On Saturday, Sept. 16, members put up flags on the parade route.

State Pow Wow will be Oct. 7-8 in Osceola.

The meeting adjourned at 8 p.m. The next meeting will be Tuesday, Oct. 10, at the Elks Lodge with dinner at 6 p.m. and meeting to follow at 7 p.m. All war veterans are encouraged to attend.

Beta Sigma Phi

Iowa Alpha Sigma Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Thursday, Sept. 14, at the Pizza Ranch with all members present. Roll call was answered by relating any experience or wishes relating to ballooning. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Patricia Fils gave the treasurer’s report and bills were presented for payment. Marilyn Larimore announced service plans and Cheryl McClure thanked the group for roses received during her illness.

Following the business meeting, President Loretta Kelly gave a short inspirational interlude from “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff.” Norma Putnam presented the program on topics relating to our natural resources and medication uses. After the closing ritual, Marilyn Blazek served refreshments and the group enjoyed visiting.

DAR

Thirteen members of the Nancy McKay Harsh Chapter, DAR, met Saturday, Sept. 9, at Summit House in Creston. Hostesses for the morning were Bonnie Riepe, Lynne Schlaht and Deb Richardson.

The program on Constitution Week had to be cancelled due to the illness of several SWCC students who were to give the program.

During the commemorative events moment, Connie Kinkade gave the background of Uncle Sam, a popular icon for the United States. The legend is Uncle Sam was created after the very real person, Sam Wilson, who was a meat packer during the War of 1812 and stamped his boxes “U.S.” The image of the Uncle Sam as Americans know him, first appeared on recruitment posters for WWI and later, for WWII.

Darlene Morgan gave the women’s issues moment and encouraged everyone to be sure they have wills, and if they have a spouse to be sure and make a list of all accounts and passwords. Rosalie O’Grady told about Charles Pickney, who at age 29 was the youngest person at the Constitutional Convention.

Schlaht volunteered to be Sunshine chairman and will send birthday, get well and sympathy cards to members.

During old business, Pam Marvin reported on the events of the August meeting to Chariton.

New business included Constitution Week which is Sept. 17-24.  Members in their respective communities will create displays to celebrate the event. In 1955, DAR petitioned Congress to create this special week.  On Aug. 2, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the request into law.

Members were encouraged to attend the District DAR meeting Oct. 12 in Johnston. Marj Kinkade was recognized for her 20 years of service as DAR newsletter and yearbook editor and registrar. She is retiring, and members were asked to consider filling the vacancies.

Members answered roll call by naming someone who signed the U.S. Constitution.

The next meeting will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14. Members will meet at the Ringgold County Court House in Mount Ayr where Dennis Adkisson will give a tour. Roll call will be “Where were you born?”

Any woman who can trace her family back to a Revolutionary War ancestor is eligible to join DAR and should contact Marj Kinkade at 641-782-2503.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Sept. 20.

Canasta winners were Linda Clark, first; Gwen Sandeman, second; and Loretta Kelly, third.

Barb Veitz won the door prize.

Joy Seeley will host cards and chatter Wednesday, Sept. 27.

Kent Dinner Club met Sept. 14 with five attending.
