Pearson leads Spartan golfers in opening weekend

The Southwestern Community College golf team got the 2017 fall season underway last weekend in a pair of events.

The Spartan men took second in a tightly-contested triangular Friday at Columbus, Nebraska, hosted by Central Community College.

York College won the vent by shooting a 312. Southwestern was only two strokes back at 314 and Central CC was third at 319.

The Spartans were led by freshman Oliver Pearson’s second-place finish at 38-39 — 77.

On Saturday and Sunday the men’s and women’s teams participated in the Klocke Family Classic held at Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion. Host school was Mount Mercy College.

Pearson, freshman from Melbourne, Australia, again led the Spartans by finishing in a tie for 22nd place at 80-73 — 153 in the 36-hole event. As a team the Spartans finished 13th among 17 teams as one of only four NJCAA teams in the field.

“This is probably the most competitive tournament we will compete in this fall,” SWCC coach Doug North said. “Oliver improved by seven strokes from day one to day two as the team improved by six strokes, also.”

The Spartan women were led by sophomore Sydney Goltl’s tie for 23rd at 100-96 — 196. The team improved by more than 20 strokes from day one to day two, finishing in seventh place among eight teams at 464-435 — 899.

The Spartans next play in the Graceland Invitational, with the men playing on Thursday and the women on Saturday.

Southwestern hosts its own meet Sept. 22 at Crestmoor Golf Club, with more than 60 players expected.
