The buck stops here

From Randy Hughes

Creston

There have been statements made that the recent KKK incident does not represent the community values of Creston. It may be that we are ignoring our responsibility.

In November 2016, Creston voters gave a majority to President Donald Trump, whose slogan of “Make America Great Again” was to me, “Let America Hate Again.” Trump’s nominee for Attorney General, head of the Department of Justice, once said, “The Klan is OK.”

Both Iowa Senators, who have received comfortable electoral margins in Creston, approved Attorney General Sessions for his post. It is clear that a visible and strong commitment to fairness and equality is not the highest priority for voters in Creston.

We should not be surprised that impressionable youth act out when mature voters approve of candidates who foster discrimination and, by extension, the logical consequences, violence and murder.

My grandmother used this phrase, “Don’t make a skunk your pet, then complain about the smell.”
