LAMONI — Nodaway Valley’s own, Shane Breheny led the Southwestern Community College boys cross country team to a near-top finish at Saturday’s Graceland Invite.
The Spartans finished second as a team to NAIA stronghold Park University.
Breheny finished in seventh-place in 21:45, just before teammate Chanse Webster, in 21:46.80.
“It’s good seeing Shane continue to be our leader and Chance coming backk strong and being a team leader for us for sure,” first-year SWCC head coach Trey Bruton said. Phoenix Shadden took 13th in 22:11.80, a time Bruton knows he can improve upon, especially as he fought issues with blisters on his feet.
The Spartans had four more runners take the 10-13 spots, as the Spartans’ pack-running lent them a good finish to the race.
“It’s really good to put a pack like that together in bigger meets. That’s really going to help us,” Bruton said.
On the women’s side, Heather Jesse (seventh in 17:19.30) and Christina Stopak (ninth in 17:50.80) led the Spartans. SWCC finished last among the four teams.
