CHARITON — East Union soared past the competition at the Chariton tournament over the weekend, winning five matches to take the title while dropping just two sets over the day Saturday.

Alissa Weinkoetz lashed down 25 kills over the tournament, Callie Gossman had 42 digs and Megan Mitchell assisted 59 times, including 17 times in the 2-1 win over Southeast Warren in the finals, which East Union won 25-21, 22-25, 15-6.

Jayden Welcher also served successfully on 61 of 62 serves during the tournament.

The only other squad to take a set from the Class 1A 14th-ranked Eagles was Davis County in a match East Union won 25-15, 19-25, 15-11.

UP NEXT — East Union (10-2), takes its nine-match win streak to Greenfield today (Tuesday) to face Nodaway Valley (4-10).

Diagonal 3, Orient-Macksburg 0

DIAGONAL — Three sets was all it took for Diagonal volleyball to grab a quick home win over Orient-Macksburg Thursday, by scores of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-11.

The Maroonettes took care of business by taking care of the easy stuff, going 59 of 68 on serves, with only two players missing more than one serve.

Katie Sobotka, Bailey Taylor and Cassie Lohmann combined to serve unsuccessfully on just two of 41 serves.

Lohmann contributed 14 assists to the Diagonal cause and three digs.

Sabokta had six digs to lead Diagonal.

Sabokta’s seven kills and Emily Newton’s five were tops for Diagonal in the win.

The Bulldogs tallied 12 aces, but could not get enough of a powerful attack going to take a set from Diagonal.

Caitlyn Buckman had three kills, while Kaela Eslinger and Montana Holtry both had two in the loss.

UP NEXT — Diagonal (2-1, 1-1) plays at Murray (2-0, 2-0) on Thursday. Orient-Macksburg (0-4, 0-3), which lost to Paton-Churdan Monday by scores of 25-13, 25-14 and 25-17, will play at Mormon Trail today (Tuesday).

GRISWOLD — A good showing at the Griswold tournament left Southwest Valley feeling good after the weekend

Hailey Thomas, Alaina Currin and Jentry Schafer each made the all-tournament team.

“I am really proud of the girls for today’s play in the Griswold Tournament,” Southwest Valley coach Lindsay Wetzel said. “The girls came out ready to play from the start. We didn’t play as well in our first match against IKM-M. We struggled again with serve receive which affected our ability to stay in system offensively. When we played them again for the championship game we played point for point in the first set.”

The Timberwolves swamped Griswold 21-10 21-15, as Thomas led the way with 12 assists and the Timberwolves were successful on 39 of 41 serves.

Southwest Valley beat Riverside 21-13 and 21-6. Lexie Haer and Schafer combined for 13 kills. Thomas was crucial in the attack with 22 assists and Currin got the Timberwolves jump-started with nine digs and 10 of 10 serving.

The win over AC/GC was more competitive for Southwest Valley, which won 22-20 and 21-16.

Haer and Schafer combined for 13 kills once more, as Thomas assisted 19 times. The Timberwolves were a perfect 42 of 42 on serves in the win.

IKM-Manning presented a more difficult challenge as Southwest Valley fell twice consecutively, once 21-14 and 21-12 and again 22-20, 21-11.

The Heartland Christian victory saw the Timberwolves win 21-10 and 21-19.

SHENANDOAH — The Lenox volleyball team incurred some troubles in a winless weekend at the Shenandoah tournament.

Brooke Miller tallied 18 kills in the tournament and Katelyn Belding had 25 assists.

LEON — Nodaway Valley has won three of its last five matches after losing nine in a row to start the season, with the exception of a forfeit.

The Wolverines played to their capabilities in defeating Pleasantville 25-22, 25-21 and 25-18 on Thursday.

At Monday's triangular in Leon, the Wolverines fell to Central Decatur 16-25, 25-19, 8-15. They then defeated Lamoni 25-21, 23-25, 15-7.
Sadie Marnin had nine kills and Corinne Bond tallied six in the win over Lamoni.

“Sadie Marnin came up huge,” Nodaway Valley coach Allison Kilburz said.

“Corinne Bond had some key plays for us at different times,” Kilburz added “… Having her presence on the right is huge for us.”

Lexi Shike boosted up 19 assists in the win and also served four aces.

Bond had six kills in the loss to the Cardinals.

“I think that our team is definitely coming together figuring out more and more about each other,” Kilburz said. “... It’s a good thing for out program that we have three freshmen, but I think we’re still gaining more experience for it.”
