Talented senior division acts (ages 13-21) advanced to the championship round in Bill Riley’s 58th annual Iowa State Fair Talent Search. Acts will perform again 1:30 p.m. Sunday, August 20. Kaeleigh Ballentine, 22, and Kanyon Huntington, 14, both of Afton advanced with their clog duet dance.

Nuts of all sorts were the special ingredient in the create a winner with Gurley’s competition, judged Thursday, Aug. 17, at the 2017 Iowa State Fair. Judy Kiburz-Harrison of Tingley place third in breads and rolls and received honorable mention in other baked items.

Judy Kiburz-Harrison of Tingley won first place and a $50 cash award in the “Our Front Porch Books Favorite Fair Foods” competition, judged Thursday, Aug. 17, at the 2017 Iowa State Fair. Entrants were challenged to create an award worthy dish that they associate with the State Fair.

In the foods made with honey competition, judged Friday, Aug. 18, at the 2017 Iowa State Fair, Judy Kiburz-Harrison of Tingley place first in honey creations - honey cookies and third in honey creations - honey chocolate chip cookies, and Pamela Cooper of Mount Ayr placed third in honey creations - honey BBQ sauce.
Entries were judged on the best use of honey as the sole sweetener in each entry.

Contestants of all ages pulled their way to victory in the 4x4 stomper pull contest held Saturday, Aug. 19, at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.
Entrants hitched certified weights to their battery-operated, handmade miniature trucks to see who could pull the farthest distance in 20 seconds.
Results were:
Semi – age 10 and under – Andrew Schlapia, 3, of Clearfield placed second and Adrian Schlapia, 6, of Clearfield placed third
• age 11 and up – Darin Schlayia, 37, of Clearfield placed first and Dave Denton, 32, of Afton placed third
Stock – age 10 and under – Aiden Denton, 8, of Afton placed first and Adrian Schlapia, 6, of Clearfield placed second

2) Crystal Denton, 32, of Afton placed second
Bully – age 10 and under – Gage Hoffman, 5, of Thayer placed first, Aiden Denton, 8, of Afton placed second and Regan Hoffman, 3, of Thayer placed third

Entrants from across the country squared off in friendly competition in the adult checkers tournament Saturday, Aug. 19, at the 2017 Iowa State Fair. Darwin Willett, 72, of Creston won first place in the tournament.

Thirty-six of the best mom callers from across the Midwest competed in the mom calling contest held Friday, Aug. 18, at the 2017 Iowa State Fair. Alaina Davis, 6, of Creston placed second in ages 5-9.

Carey Lynam of Creston won first place in the ladies nail driving contest judged Saturday, Aug. 19, at the 2017 Iowa State Fair. Nicole Stevens of Afton claimed second place. There were 26 contestants vying for ribbons at this year’s contest.
The contest was part of “Rural Americana Olde Tyme Competitions” in Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall. First prize was $5 and ribbons were awarded in each class.
