State fair results

DES MOINES – The top artists from across the country put their skills to the test Aug. 8 at the fine arts competition judged prior to the start of the 2017 Iowa State Fair.

The three-judge panel evaluated more than 560 pieces of art. Of those, only 380 were accepted into the art show. These entries were on display throughout the fair on the third floor of the Patty and Jim Cownie Cultural Center from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every fair day.

Sandy Maxa of Lenox received first place in adult - fiber.

Five talented senior division acts (ages 13-21) advanced Aug. 13 to the semi-final round in Bill Riley’s 58th annual Iowa State Fair Talent Search. Each act performed again Thursday, Aug. 17, Friday, Aug. 18, or Saturday, Aug. 19.

Haylea England, 18, of Mount Ayr, Sadie Marnin, 17, of Greenfield advanced with a clog duet in dance.

Horseshoe throwers competed in the Iowa State regional team championship and open singles divisions of the horseshoe pitching tournament held Friday, Aug. 11, at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.

The State Fair hosts both championship and open class competitions every fair day. Division winners are crowned daily. All horseshoe pitching competitions take place on the clay courts just east of Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall.

Iowa State Regional Team Championship included Deb Davis of Ankeny, Kristy Klejch of Creston, Shirley Sprague of Berwick, Sheryl Mason of Grinnell and Kelly Turbett of Tama for fifth place.

Participants from across Iowa competed in the open singles, state womens championship and state juniors and cadets championships divisions of the horseshoe pitching tournament held Sunday, Aug. 13, at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.

In open singles - class A Derek Bloodgood of Creston placed third.

In open singles - class E, Ryce Reynolds of Mount Ayr placed third, Nancy Reynolds of Mount Ayr placed fourth and Emma Reynolds of Mount Ayr placed fifth.

In women’s state championship, Kristy Klejch of Creston placed first.

In juniors championship, Derek Bloodgood of Creston place second.

Participants from across Iowa competed in the Midwest senior ClasDesic and open doubles divisions of the horseshoe pitching tournament held Monday, Aug. 14, at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.

In open doubles - class A, Derek Bloodgood of Creston and Randy Clark of Monroe placed second.

Participants from across Iowa competed in the open singles and open doubles divisions of the horseshoe pitching tournament held Tuesday, Aug. 15, at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.

In open doubles - class A, Derek Bloodgood of Creston and Logan Duffy of Norwalk placed third.

In the key lime challenge competition, judged Thursday, Aug. 10, at the 2017 Iowa State Fair, Judy Kiburz-Harrison of Tingley placed third in key lime cookies.

Entries were judged on taste, appearance and creativity. A key lime is smaller in size and rounder in shape than the common deep green Persian Lime.

In the Crochet division of the fabric and threads contest judged prior to the start of the 2017 Iowa State Fair, Darcy Johnson of Arispe placed third in three categories - poncho, pullover sweater and purse or tote.

In the Quilting division of the fabric and threads contest judged prior to the start of the 2017 Iowa State Fair, Jackie Orton of Lorimor placed first in quilt block.
