William G. Jones, 86, of Afton died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, at Afton Care Center in Afton.

Celebration of life services will be noon Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25, in Creston. The Rev. Dwayne Henrichs will officiate. Burial will be in Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter following the service with military honors provided by Iowa Army National Guard. HCI Hospice Chaplain Mike Albert will conduct the committal service. Open visitation will be from 11 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the funeral home. William George Jones, son of Richard Jones and Nora (Brown), was born Oct. 12, 1930, in Boone. He attended school north of Red Oak in Stennett during grade school and then attended Zion High School. William left school to help on the farm before moving to Omaha, Nebraska, where he attended railroad school for a short time learning telegraphy.

William married Dorothy Richards and to this union three children were born, Stephen Douglas, Martin Ray and Rebecca Ann. They later divorced. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving from 1955 to 1957 in Korea. After his discharge, he continued to farm and went on to be a fireman for the railroad in Creston.

In March 1973, he married Karen Evon (Negethon) in Minneapolis, Minnesota, at the Community Methodist Church. Eventually, he became an engineer, putting in 30 years of service before retiring in 1985.

William was a member of NARVE and a former member of Eagles Lodge, Elks, VFW and American Legion.

William is survived by his wife Karen Jones of Afton; sons, Stephen Douglas Jones of Omaha, Nebraska, and Martin Ray (Laura) Jones of Naples, Florida; daughter Rebecca (Kenneth) Cunningham of Afton; brothers, Charles Stambaugh of California and Ronald Jones of Coin; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Verlene Jones of Creston and many nieces and nephews.

William was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Milton and Cornelia Negethon; brother Robert Jones; sister Shirley Moore; sister-in-law Judy Jones and brother-in-law Terry Negethon.
