James “Dan” Shannon

James “Dan” Shannon, 94, of Boone, formerly of the Union County and Afton area, died at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone Aug. 4, 2017.

Following James’ wishes, he has been cremated. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, in the chapel of the Eastern Star Home, 715 W. Mamie Eisenhower Ave., Boone. Burial of his cremains will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Nevinville at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the family and 715 W. Third St., Boone, IA 50036. James Daniel Shannon was born March 29, 1923, in Spaulding, the son of Lloyd Dell and Gladys Milree (Choate) Shannon. On November 26, 1946, James married Alice Oshel in Atchison, Kansas.

Over the years, Dan worked as a farmer near Boone and Ogden and in Union County for Cheers Farms. He also hauled gravel for Hallett Construction in Boone.

Dan loved raising and showing Belgian draft horses. He would spend time at horse sales and horse shows at the Iowa State Fair. He was a member of the Belgian Draft Horse Association. Dan was always willing to help his neighbors, but, most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Dan is survived by his wife, Alice, of Boone; seven children, Janet McGovern of Ankeny, Jill (Fred) Willrich of Ankeny, John (Linda) Shannon of Coal Hill, Arkansas, James “Jim” (Sheri) Shannon of Arispe, Julie (Tim) Dannen of Boone, Jean (Joe) Brooks of Ogden and Jay (Peggy) Shannon of Oak Harbor, Washington; twelve grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and five siblings, Charles, Don, Dean, Mary Drury and Iris Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Jason Shannon; two sisters, Dorothy Radke and Eileen Everling and son-in-law, John McGovern.
