Herbert “Hub” Brantner

Herbert “Hub” Brantner was born Aug. 14, 1928, in Dixon, Illinois, and passed away peacefully at the Lenox Care Center in Lenox on July 27, 2017. He was the sixth of 10 children of Benjamin Michael and Hassie Mae (White) Brantner, named after President Herbert Hoover.

He graduated from Lanark Community Schools in 1946. 

Hub enlisted in the Army Reserves several months after high school and after discharge, enrolled at Northern Illinois University. While there, he was recalled to active duty with the 25th Infantry Division and served in Korea for more than 2 years. He was honorably discharged in 1952.

He returned home and began farming with his father on the home farm east of Lanark, Illinois. He married Harriett Geneva Eadie on June 28, 1952, at the United Presbyterian Church in Hanover, Illinois. The couple had two children: Peter LaClare and Elizabeth Anne. Hub and Hattie farmed in partnership with his brother Sam (Samuel Alfred) and his wife, Thelma, for 32 years. They had stock cows, fed cattle and raised hay and grain. In 1985, Hattie died of cancer, ending their 33-year marriage.  

On July 29, 1990, Hub married Velma M. McCombie of Savanna, Illinois, and the two settled in Savanna, later moving to a residence near Thomson, Illinois. Velma passed away unexpectedly Feb. 20, 2013. After Velma’s passing, Hub moved to Lenox, Iowa, residing at the Lenox Care Center near his son, Peter, and his family for the last four years of his life. He attended church at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox while there.

Hub is survived by Peter (Kim) of Lenox; granddaughter Lindsay (Shane) Stoaks and their children Laramie, Laney and Hallie; Betsy (David) Smith of Tucson, Arizona, and their children; Alexa Morelli, Blake (Dani) Johnson and children Sloan and Vaughn, and Britt Smith and Tristen Smith; Terry (Marion) McCombie of Tucson, and families; Tim (Jen) McCombie and Gerald (Jamie) McCombie of Savanna and families; Johnna (Tom) Richardson of Panama City, Florida, and families.

Also surviving Hub are his sisters Mary (Lou) Henson of Champaign, Illinois, and Becky (Virgil) Coomes of Freeport, Illinois; sisters-in-law Carolee Zuck Brantner of Freeport and Ann Marie Brantner of Naples, Florida; brother-in-law Don Earp of Galesburg, Illinois, and 25 nieces and nephews.   

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, 2017, at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna, IL. A memorial gathering will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Lanark Cemetery, Lanark, Illinois. The family requests no flowers. Memorials can be left to the Carroll County Senior Center, 603 N. Main St., Mount Carroll, IL 61053, or the United Charitable Association’s Transitional Housing Project for Women and Children in Lenox, P.O. Box 402, Creston, IA 50801.
