Marcia Showalter honored with DAISY Award

MOUNT AYR – Marcia Showalter, a nurse at Mount Ayr Medical Clinic, was honored June 16 during the sixth-annual DAISY Award event at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Showalter was recognized along with her peers from Mercy-affiliated rural hospitals in central Iowa.

DAISY is an acronym for diseases attacking the immune system. The foundation was formed in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33. The primary mission of the DAISY Foundation is to express profound gratitude to nurses for the work they do through the skillful and amazingly compassionate care they deliver for patients and their families every day. More than 2,600 health care organizations worldwide partner with the foundation to honor their nurses with the DAISY Award.

“I’m so proud of Marcia, and so pleased she has received the recognition she deserves,” said Gordon Winkler, CEO of Ringgold County Hospital. “Marcia epitomizes the exceptional people who provide exceptional care at the clinic and the hospital.”

The celebration included recognition of individual award recipients, lunch and a program that included a keynote address by Tena Barnes Carraher, the foundation’s co-founder and wife of J. Patrick Barnes.

Showalter was joined by family, friends, senior leaders and board members who expressed appreciation for her service and being such an extraordinary nurse.
