Canned goods wanted for Union County Fair

Area residents are invited to enter canned goods and frozen jams, jellies or spreads in the canned good department competition at the Union County Fair. Dig in the canned goods area at home and bring a jar of whatever produce was canned last year. The department is always anxious to see what participants have.

Items entered may not have received any ribbons in earlier years’ judging. All entries should be in standard jars with lids and rings, except for the frozen items. Paraffin should not be used on jams and jellies.

Entries will be accepted from 8 to 11 a.m. Friday, July 21. There will not be an opportunity to enter items before that time. Entry fee is 50 cents per item.

Premiums will be paid for blue – $1.25, red – $1 and white – 75 cents. There will be a sweepstakes award for the person receiving the most blue ribbons. A special category for men who do canning is also a feature.

Judging of the canned goods and frozen jams, jellies and spreads will be at 1 p.m. Friday, July 21, and is open to anyone wishing to attend. All entries will be released from 8 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 26.
