Meteorologists are calling for a bout of long, hot summer for the next couple of weeks. I went to the swimming pool the other day and when I came outside, I thought I was still in the pool.
When the humidity gets up over 70 percent and it is already 90 degrees out, I start to look for some air conditioning. The hot weather is just in time for all the county fairs in the area.
It looks like it will be the last year for the animal barns at the Union County Fair with a new facility starting to go up shortly after the fair is over. A big “thank you” to all those folks on the fair board who wrote the grants and gathered up money to make the project a reality. And, of course, all those who contributed to the project. Union County has a growing livestock program for the kids and has outgrown the current facilities. It’s a nice problem to have in this day and age. A lot of programs around the country seem to be getting smaller.
I talked two weeks ago about all the meat prices going up. Now, I see the drought up north in Minnesota and the Dakotas has upped the price of wheat more than 50 percent over the last month. It may be the worst wheat crop in more than 30 years. The crop is going for about $8 per bushel. So it may very well end up costing you more to make your baked goods going forward.
I see the street corn vendors are out and selling. I had some Iowa-grown sweet corn last night that was pretty darn good. It should have had a pretty good growing season with lots of rain earlier in the spring to get it going and plenty of hot weather lately to help finish it off. Take advantage of the corn while it is in season. Nothing like an Iowa treat.
Adams Street bridge
After almost a year, the bridge on West Adams Street going over McKinley Lake is now open. I know the folks living just west of the lake are glad to see it open.
The new bridge looks nice. Plus, the new approaches really show it off. With the addition of the sediment pool in the Taylor Estate area, we are now getting closer to dredging the lake. Getting the lake back to a nice depth would be a wonderful improvement for the whole area.
Another big “thank you” goes out to the the Creston Shooters for putting on the nice Fourth of July Fireworks show last weekend. They always do a nice job. Speaking of fireworks, I didn’t notice many problems being it was the first year of allowing fireworks in the state. The only annoying offenders are the ones who like to shoot late night fireworks. I need my beauty sleep you know!
Iowa ninth and 15th
I see Iowa came in ninth in the country as a good place to live on the CNBC survey. Things like the clean air and low crime rate helped to achieve the rating. The only negative mentioned was maybe the lack of things to do, which I find unusual since I never seem to be looking for things to do. I guess serving on lots of boards will take care of that issue!
Iowa came in 15th as a good place to do business. Our lowest mark was on the workforce side. We need more people, which is a major reason some businesses choose not to come here. Education was one of our highest rankings in both surveys.
