National finalist
Scott Giles of Mount Ayr received recognition this week as a finalist for the National HIgh School Athletic Coaches Association Golf Coach of the Year at the association’s annual meeting in East Peoria, Illinois.
Mitch Osborn of Harlan was named the NHSACA Boys Basketball National Coach of the Year. Longtime Harlan football coach Curt Bladt was inducted into the NHSACA National Hall of Fame.
Little league night
Creston Baseball/Softball Inc. league players and coaches will be recognized at Creston Little League Night June 29 at the Creston High School home games against Atlantic.
At both the Panther baseball and softball games, all youth league players wearing their jerseys will be admitted free of charge. At each field, there will be a drawing to go onto the field with a member of the varsity team for the national anthem. Each player will also receive a popsicle or freezer pop at no cost.
Youth players are asked to arrive at the high school game by 6:30 p.m.
Officials honored
DES MOINES — A total of 166 high school officials were honored at the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s 23rd annual Officials Recognition Banquet and Awards Ceremony April 29 at the Iowa Events Center - Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center.
Seventy-eight officials received plaques for 15 years of service, with 30 honored for 25 years of work and 26 receiving a plaque for 35 years of officiating.
Area officials reaching milestones:
15 years — Scott Busch, Creston; Steve Dick, Winterset.
25 years — John Ford, Mount Ayr.
Southwest District Official of Year, Carrie Erickson, Council Bluffs.
Central District Official of Year, Carl Davis, Indianola.
Wrestling official of year — Jim Bruck, Harlan.
