Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Library met June 19 with Emily Cook, Jessica Duncan, Starr Cure, Judy Hoakison, Marisue Lewis, Kay Raymond, Karen Walter, Ann Coulter and Library Director David Hargrove present.

The agenda was approved and the minutes were approved as corrected.

Ann Coulter, library board of trustees, announced the board is in need of a new member. Jean Ide had decided not to do another six-year term. The new member must be a county representative and male to have a gender balance. Susan Weight is the newest board of trustee member.

Hargrove told how patrons can now view and renew materials on the library website. There is 24/7 access, and borrowers can renew once. The trustees and capital campaign committee will host an event to recognize the Friends of the Library past and present. The Friends will celebrate their 20-year anniversary. This will be the first time the Friends have gathered together in their 20 years. The date has been set for Saturday, Aug. 26, with time to be determined.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 4, at the restored Creston Depot.

Friends are planning a bake sale Monday, Aug. 7, at the farmers market in Creston.

Members will schedule another sorting day for the used books in July as more books are coming in.

A beginning scrapbooking event is being planned for students 10 to 18 years old. There is a limit of 10 people. More information will be forthcoming.

The next meeting will be 6 p.m. July 17 at the library.

DWF

The DWF Executive Committee met Thursday, June 15, at First Christian Church Disciples of Christ for the induction of the new officers. Rebecca Circle was in charge of the induction.

The DWF held a short business meeting. The meeting opened up with reciting the DWF prayer. There were no minutes or treasurer’s reports given. There was no old business.

New business discussed was Pastor Tony asking if a couple of the members could go with him to a meeting at MATURA concerning a project to teach young couples how to cook.

There were no committee reports.

A motion was made to adjourn the business meeting and the meeting adjourned.

The next meeting will be 10 a.m. Sept. 7 at the church.

Pam Richie inducted the new officers: President Pat Fils, Vice-President Rhonda Vogel, Secretary Twila Brant and Treasurer Barb Jennings. The officers were presented with a gift and refreshments were served by Rebecca Circle.

Beta Kappa Chapter

Beta Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International met the morning of June 16 at Henry A. Wallace Culture Center with nine regular members and two initiates present.

Correspondence was read from Shelley Bakerink, thanking the members for recognizing her with the Educational Excellence Award. It was also announced Samantha Harris, a senior at Nodaway Valley, received this year’s Grant-in-Aid.

Members were reminded dues of $65 for 2017-18 should be paid by the October meeting. Any member who is not able to attend the next meeting may send her dues to Deb Bauer. Connie Nielsen reported receiving a note of appreciation for all the empty pill bottles the chapter sent to Malawi in Indonesia. Currently there is a desperate need for surgical gloves.

President Julie Derby gave a report on the state convention she and Karen Tussey attended. Sadly, two more state chapters were dissolved. However, our chapter was awarded the Gold Certificate of Excellence, the top award presented. Next year’s state convention will be held in Des Moines.

Two new members were initiated into Beta Kappa Chapter – Jill Tussey and Deb Lilly. Denise Ackerlund presented a short Founders’ Day program, followed by program planning for the next year, led by Connie Nielsen.

The next meeting will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Greenfield Public Library. Hostesses will be Deb Bauer, Robyn Ploeger and Vicky Wood. During the program, members will share favorite books they have read and explore the library’s facilities. Each member is asked to bring four dozen cookies for cookie trays for the teachers in the area.

After the meeting was adjourned, several members stayed for a delicious lunch at the center.

VFW Post 1797

VFW post 1797 met June 13 at the Elks in Creston. Nineteen members and guests were present for dinner.

Commander Gary O’Daniels called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. with 15 members present.

The post draped the charter for veterans Paul Downing, Arlo Wittstock and Jim McGuire.

Minutes and QM reports were read and approved.

Service officers reported 66 hours for community service, 86 hours for the hospital, 92 hours for honor guard, 2 hours at the cemetery and 16 hours for the bloodmobile, for a total of 262 hours. Members also traveled 550 miles for veterans.

In old business, members heard an update on Union County Honor Flight, and reviewed Memorial weekend and Poppy Day. The post received $1,575 in donations Saturday, May 27, from Union County people. A big thank-you to all for their generosity. This money will be used to help veterans in the community and state.

Armed Forces Day was held Sunday, May 21, at the VFW Ballfield and hosted by Creston Little League. Thanks to the committee, it was a great success.

In new business, letters will be sent out in July to veterans that will be taken to Washington, D.C., in September by Brushy Creek organization.

Upcoming events for Post 1797 include Wednesday, June 14, for Elks Flag Dag program and 10 a.m. July 4 for the parade in Creston.

Union County Veterans Affairs office has a new Vietnam book published in Iowa. This book is available to any veteran of Union County that served in Vietnam.

The post is looking for veterans to help man the Iowa State Fair booth. Contact O’Daniels or Denny Abel, if interested.

Abel gave a report on the state and district. Next district meeting will be Sept. 9 in Newton and Oct. 7-8 State Pow Wow in Osceola.

The meeting adjourned at 8 p.m. The next meeting will be Tuesday, July 11, at the Elks with a 6 p.m. dinner and 7 p.m. meeting to follow. All war veterans are encouraged to attend.

DAR

Ten members of Nancy McKay Harsh Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, met 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 10, at Summit House in Creston. Hostesses were Elaine Brown and Rhonda Oliphant.

Rick Leonard of Creston was guest speaker. Leonard is currently a member of the Iowa National Guard and assistant to the chaplain at Camp Dodge.  He spoke of his experiences as assistant chaplain and member of the 101 Air Borne Division. His main duty as a soldier was to always defend the United States Constitution.

Vice Regent Jan Morgan led the group in the DAR rituals and conducted the business meeting. Members answered roll call by giving the rank of their Revolutionary War soldier.

Pam Marvin gave the women in Iowa report focusing on Rosa Cunningham, born in 1890, who became a civic leader in the women’s rights movement.  In 1980, Cunningham was inducted into the Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame. She worked in the labor force for 70 years before retiring at age 96. She joined the WACS at age 53. For the Constitution Moment, Marvin told members Benjamin Franklin was the oldest delegate to the Constitutional convention at age 81 and Jonathan Dayton was the youngest at age 26.

Bonnie Riepe reviewed the protocol for flying the Stars and Stripes.

Members shared their experiences decorating graves on Memorial Day. A special ceremony is being planned to retire worn out American flags. Details will be shared at the July meeting. A tentative of date 9 a.m. June 17 at the home of Marjorie Kinkade was set for the officers to plan events for 2017-18.

The next meeting will be held Saturday, July 8, at Homestead, 610 W. Iowa St., in Greenfield. Hostesses will be Ethel Handley, Carol Baudler and Julie Sorensen. Kelly Franklin will give the program “Wrongful Accusations Against Women.”  Roll call will be “Have you even been wrongly accused?”

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met June 21.

Canasta winners were Maxine May, first; Gwen Sandeman, second; and Rose Blakesley, third.

May won the door prize.

Janet Kessler will host cards and chatter Wednesday, June 28.

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, at the Windrow meeting room with 21 members and one guest. President-elect Korina Loudon presided, Jamie Travis gave the prayer and Ellen Gerharz was the finemaster.

The program was given by Ben Adamson with the Union County Fair Board. He discussed the capital campaign for phase one of building improvements at the Union County Fairgrounds. The group has collected almost the full $1.5 million that is needed to get started due to donations and grants.

Members were thanked for helping to load up the Bloodmobile at the Lutheran Church.

Members will be donating the remaining memorial funds to Creston Little League after next week’s meeting at the Ron Levine memorial bench at Bill Sears Field, members of Ron’s family will also be attending the ceremony.

Club members are hosting Open Table June 27.

The Kiwanis Club will also be helping with organizing the Fourth of July parade and putting up and taking down of the flags on the Fourth. Members contact Gerharz at the Creston Chamber office to sign up to help.
