Melvin Stauffer, 88, of Creston died Monday, June 5, 2017, at Crest Haven Care Centre in Creston.

Celebration of life memorial services will be 10 a.m. Friday, June 9, at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25, in Creston. The Rev. Chuck Spindler will officiate the service. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, south of Creston. Open visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Melvin Earl Stauffer, son of Earl J. Stauffer and Christina M. (Elniff) Stauffer, was born Oct. 29, 1928, on a farm in Jewell County, Kansas. He was a graduate with the class of 1946 from Randall High School in Randall, Kansas.

On Nov. 28, 1947, Melvin married Darlene Louise Knowlton in Belleville, Kansas. They first settled in Concordia, Kansas, where Melvin began working at a dairy, then at the newspaper and then began his career at Gambles Store. He became the manager of Gambles while living in Beloit, Kansas, then relocated as manager to Lawrence, Kansas, and then Winfield, Kansas. He moved to Creston in 1964 where he continued to work at Gambles as store manager. He was employed with Gambles for more than 35 years and then worked at Innovative Industry as a traveling salesman, retiring in 1993.

Melvin attended Crest Baptist Church in Creston. Melvin was a member, former president and secretary of the Eagle’s Lodge in Creston.

Melvin is survived by his daughters, Linda (Norm) Schroeder of Creston and Rebecca (Michael) Fucaloro of Des Moines; son Richard (Tawny) Stauffer of Creston; grandchildren, Dena (Aaron) Chapman of Creston, Zachary (Becky) Seabrooke of Des Moines, Teresa Seabrooke of Des Moines, Tyler Seabrooke of Des Moines, Jesse Stauffer of Creston, Echo (Kendric) Webb of Minot, North Dakota, and Sean Stauffer of Creston and great-grandchildren, Samuel Chapman, Maxwell Chapman, Chayla Turner, Tailyn Howard, Braydon Hayes, Kylee Stauffer-Wallace, Amera Seabrooke, Bam Stauffer and Daylynn Stauffer.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; wife Louise in 2008; brothers, Edward, Gaylord, Loreen and Fay “Donald” Stauffer; sisters, Velma Hansen and Emma Roberts; grandson Chad Schroeder and great-grandson Calder Seabrooke.
