Throwback Thursday

Today is May 25, the 145th day of the year. So, there are 220 days left in 2017. Below are news items from the Creston News Advertiser for this week (May 22-28) in history:

10 years ago

Macksburg was gearing up for the 32nd National Skillet Throw Championship competition in the city park. The day included a parade, all-day flea market, pedal pull, greased pig contest and the skillet throwing competition.

2007 was going to be a summer with multiple changes at McKinley Park in Creston. Between an extension in the walking trail, new playground for kids ages two to five, 18-hole disc golf course, skatepark and the Civil War memorial garden slated to begin in the summer of 2008, the park was going to be improved over the next few years.

20 years ago

Southwest Iowa Homebuilders Association donated $500 to purchase sod to cover the area inside the fence and in front of the bath house of the leisure pool in McKinley Park. Volunteering to install were Dave Jennett, Bill Winterstien and Mark Huff. The new pool and slide were scheduled to open May 31.

Panther baseball had Conor Reed, Ryan Key, Todd Stalker, Nick Jannings, Ben Gerleman, Kipp Crigger, Nick Nevins, Brady Steenhoek and Brian Bucklin as returning lettermen as they opened their season against Waukee.

Creston Community School Board was in search of a high school principal after receiving word Principal Chris Duree had accepted a job as vice president for instruction at SWCC, filling the vacancy created when SWCC President Barb Crittenden moved up from the position.

50 years ago

The 1967 Creston High School prom was held on Tuesday evening at the high school. Linda Winkler and Jack Lynn were named most representative of the senior class and led the grand march. The banquet preceded the prom with 388 served in the school gym. The Ralph Zarnow band provided music for the dance following the banquet. The 15th-annual Crestubilee started with a movie showing at the Strand Theater. After the movie, there was food, a carnival, music and dancing, games and sketching of caricatures and ended with a breakfast at the Eagles Lodge where Crestubilee souvenir gifts and six door prizes were awarded with a drawing. Jim Larkin won a one-year theater pass, Sharon Evans won a six-month theater pass, Lois Wolfe won a three-month theater pass, Marsha O’Riley won a transistor radio, Tom Rouh won an electric shaver and Connie Holmes won a hair dryer.

Skylark Drive-in Theater was opening up for a new season with free shows “Masquerade” and “Never Too Late.” Food specials included fresh barbecued ham sandwich for $.49 and 1/2-French fried chicken with double order of French fries for $1.

General Manager Joseph Wallace announced Veg-A-Peel Co. officially changed their name to Vanmark Corporation. Wallace said, “We simply outgrew the name. It was appropriate when only vegetable peelers were produced, but the product line has expanded so much and so fast, the old name simply does not reflect the full line of products and is misleading.”

The new bathhouse, canteen, swimming beach and boat livery at Green Valley State Park, operated by Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Bolinger, was opening. Boats were available to rent for fishing or boating and a full line of fishing tackle and bait was available. The beach boasted a life guard and the canteen had a variety of delicious food.
