Sports briefs: Bevins waived by Cardinals

Bevins waived

PHOENIX, Ariz. — The Arizona Cardinals announced Wednesday that they’ve signed linebacker Mikey Bart to a contract and placed defensive lineman Collin Bevins on waivers.

Bart was undrafted out of North Carolina. This will be his first opportunity with an NFL team.

Bevins, a Creston native and an NCAA Division II All-American defensive end for national champion Northwest Missouri State, completed minicamp last weekend as an undrafted free agent.

Bevins said late Wednesday he did not plan to pursue a chance to play for another team. He has 12 credit hours remaining to complete his bachelor's degree at Northwest Missouri State in education and coaching.

Bearcat record

MARYVILLE, Mo. —  The Northwest Missouri State University track and field teams were in action at the Dr. Keeler Invitational last Thursday and Friday at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois.

Junior Brandon Phipps of Creston broke a Bearcat school record in the 5,000 meters, finishing seventh in a time of 14:25.07.

National honor

Three-time state champion Chase Shiltz of Creston/O-M received honorable mention for the Wrestling USA magazine's All-American team for the 2016-17 season.

Shiltz compiled a 190-7 record with 119 falls for the Panthers in placing second as a freshman and earning championships his final three seasons. He was also a first-team All-State football player and had a grade point average of 3.383 on a 4.0 scale.
