Sunday is “Mom’s special day.” A chance to say “thanks” to all those special ladies in your lives.
I remember when my mom was alive, we would always try to take her out to eat. We would go to a restaurant in Lincoln that served Southern fried lobster. She loved lobster and it was a real treat for her to spend some time with all of us kids. So, take some time out and spend a little time with your mom or grandmother. It will be a treat for all involved.
I see outgoing governor Branstad signed the fireworks bill giving Iowans a chance to legally shoot off fireworks in the state again.
We will get to keep our money at home by purchasing fireworks in our own county. I know a number of cities are still working on rules for their jurisdictions, including Creston. I know fireworks can be a problem if not used correctly. But, I think it is about time Iowa caught up with the rest of world on the fireworks front.
It sure seems like there have been a lot more birds around this year. I have a feeder and the number of birds and the number of different kinds of birds is growing. I’ve seen birds this year I have never seen before, from doves to wrens to red headed woodpeckers.
This weekend at the Iowa Barnstormers game, Mick Landers will be honored. Tickets for the event can be purchased at Kilgore’s RV if you would like to attend the event.
Back up to speed
Our newsroom grew by one this week with new reporter Carter Eckl. In the coming couple of weeks, we will add another new reporter who just graduated from Iowa State. It will get our local news coverage back up to where it was before the vacancies. We work hard at covering the local area. If you would ever have a good story idea, you are welcome to give us a call. We try to be in as many places as possible, but sometimes a heads up doesn’t hurt.
The rain gods are slowing down some of the farm planting this year. Doesn’t seem like we get too many days in a row before we get just enough rain to keep the farmers out of the field again. Could be a wet summer again at this rate.
Friday night is the annual SWCC spring graduation. A number of graduates from around the area will walk the stage. I’ve talked to several students who made it to their associate degree in one year just by taking several classes in high school and maybe an online class or two.
The Creston farmers market will begin June 5. I see the Des Moines farmers market started last weekend. Reports were the crowds were tremendous with the nice weather on Saturday.
I went out by Twelve Mile Lake this last weekend and there were plenty of boats out on the lake. I’ve heard reports the fishing is doing well. Lots of crappies and plenty of panfish to be had. Without Three Mile back to normal yet after last year’s draining, it looks like Twelve Mile will see most all the action this year. Although, I hear the walleye fishing at Green Valley has been good, also.
