In this month’s article, the Creston Chamber of Commerce would like to acknowledge and thank the many businesses that call Creston home. We feel it is important to recognize the contributions of our Creston small business community to our economy and our society. Please, take a moment to think about the impact on our local economy and community that these local businesses have. Look at how many people they employ, the number of people that shop in Creston because of our businesses, but do not live here and the impact on our tax base to name but a few areas that our small business community directly impact.
When you stop to think about all that we have available to us here in Creston – great grocery stores, an outstanding hospital, great medical facilities, a five-day-a-week daily newspaper, local radio station, numerous great shopping and dining experiences, great schools, two golf courses, Southern Prairie YMCA, Southwestern Community College, as well as the numerous parks and lakes to name but a few of the things that add to our quality of life – we really are quite fortunate.
Please stop by or call our local businesses, and let them know how much you appreciate them doing business in Creston. I know these hard working folks will appreciate it. May I also suggest that we not stop there, but remember them in the upcoming weeks and months, as well, by remembering to shop and buy local.
Creston businesses really do make Creston and Union County a special place to live, work, shop and call home. Thank you for being here and all that you do for our great community.
Citywide garage sale to be held June 10
Start making your plans to shop or laying aside your treasures June 10 for the Creston citywide garage sale. It has been a great success in bringing people into Creston the last several years, and this year should be even better.
Creston/Union County Visitors Center to open
The Union County Visitors Center, located at 636 New York Avenue/Highway 34 West, will open for the 2017 season on May 22 and remain open until Oct. 7. The visitors center hours will normally be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. If you would like to visit when it is not open, please call the chamber to schedule an appointment.
We are still looking for volunteers to staff the visitor center on Monday mornings and Friday. If you have time to give, please call the chamber.
Union County Historical Village to open
The Union County Historical Village and Museum will open for the season on Monday, May 29, and then be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day from 1 to 4:30 p.m. or by appointment. There is no cost to visit.
The village, located at the south end of McKinley Park, is a great spot to see what a town might have looked like in the 1890s in Iowa.

Hi-Five Honorees

Gold Star Business honored
The Chamber honored Quilts and Other Notions, 209 W. Montgomery St., this month as the May Gold Star Business in Creston. It was nominated by their fellow Crestonians because of the appearance both inside and out of their building. Congratulations.
