Fillies too much for Panther girls tennis

Boys fall at Shenandoah

Shenandoah’s girls tennis team was in control early and often in Thursday’s Hawkeye 10 Conference match with Creston/Orient-Macksburg at the Southwestern Community College courts.

The Panthers seldom had any answers for what the Fillies were doing.

Shenandoah, now 8-0 in duals, took advantage in rolling to a 9-0 win.

“Shenandoah came out and dictated play on each court,” said Creston/Macksburg assistant coach Amanda Plymale.

The Panthers were playing from on their heels throughout.

Seldom could the Panthers generate any positive momentum.

“We were left on defense and struggled to close games out,” Plymale said.

Of the nine varsity matches, the Fillies held the Panthers to less than four points in eight of them.

The closest match of the night came at number two doubles. Shenandoah’s tandem of Sara Wood and Natalie Gilbert defeated the Creston/Orient-Macksburg pair of Mattie Wheeler and Madison Callahan 8-5.

“Callahan and Wheeler were able to use quick reaction time to stay in the match,” Plymale said.

UP NEXT — Creston/Orient-Macksburg is scheduled to be back on the court today (Friday) hosting Clarke at 4:15 p.m. at the Southwestern Community College Courts. The Panthers are slated to be at Red Oak Monday. However, rain is in the forecast for both days.

Panther boys unable to rally late

SHENANDOAH — Creston/Orient-Macksburg’s boys tennis team was in position to rally heading into doubles during Thursday’s Hawkeye 10 Conference match at Shenandoah.

The Panthers could not quite muster a rally as the Mustangs held on for a 7-2 win.

Shenandoah swept all three doubles matches to secure the league victory.

“We battled in doubles, but lost all three,” said Creston/Orient-Macksburg coach Kevin Cooper.

The Mustangs took advantage of Panther mistakes throughout the dual.

“We had way too many unforced errors,” Cooper said.

The Panthers struggled to piece together enough quality moments.

“We are just way too inconsistent,” Cooper said.

A combination of things cost the Panthers.

“Some of it is from impatience and some of it is from inexperience in places,” Cooper said.

The Panthers picked up wins at number two singles from Jaden Driskell, 10-6 over Alex Goodell, and 10-4 from Walker Patterson over Christopher Hendon at number six singles.

UP NEXT — Creston/Orient-Macksburg is scheduled to play at Clarke today (Friday) and at the Atlantic Tournament Saturday, then host Red Oak on Monday. However, rain is in the forecast for all three days.
