Tricky conditions push EU golfers

AFTON — Trouble was easier to find for East Union’s girls and boys golfers during Monday’s triangular with Central Decatur and Bedford.

A gusty south wind blowing across Lakeshore Golf & Country Club, combined with recently mowed greens made it tricky for the players from the Eagles, Cardinals and Bulldogs.

East Union’s boys were able to negotiate the course well enough to earn a one-stroke win over Central Decatur, 189-190. Bedford was third with a 194.

Central Decatur’s Keaton Minnick was the medalist with a 39. Bedford’s Jett Beemer was the runner-up with a 44.

“It affected all of us,” said East Union’s Ryan Collins. “A couple of my guys had trouble. Everybody’s playing with it, so it’s no big excuse. Scores are going to be a little higher than they normally are. Your ball can get in more trouble than you think it’s going too.”

The greens added to the trouble.

“They were really fast,” Collins said. “Trying to land them on the greens and getting them to stick was hard.”

The Eagle boys left a few shots out there, but still found a way to win.

“We didn’t play our best, but with the conditions and everything, we’ll take the victory and move on,” said East Union coach Dave Campbell.

Collins led East Union with a 46. Sanden Cheers and Matt McGuire each had 47’s. Christopher Case had a 49, while Trevor Jones carded a 51 and Kyle Campbell a 53.

“We’ve been pretty steady right across the board,” Campbell said.

On the girls side, Central Decatur topped East Union 233-241. Bedford does not have a girls team this season.

The Cardinals’ Lily Simon and Kristin Schaff took home the top two individual spots, each carding a 51.

East Union was led by Anna Collins’ 52. Quinn Eslinger had a 57, while Lauren Hadley had a 65, Casey Allen posted a 67 while Oliva Moore carded a 68. Kate Sutton added an 85.

The Eagle girls were one stroke off their season’s-best total.

“That was a good for the way the weather was,” Campbell said. “All of them shot pretty well for the weather.”

UP NEXT — East Union’s boys are at tournaments today (Tuesday) and Thursday at The Preserve at Rathbun Lake near Centerville.
