EU boys juggle lineup Tuesday

TRURO —East Union shuffled the lineup around quite a bit from earlier meet this season at Tuesday’s Interstate 35 boys invitational.

Coach James Hardy and the staff used the meet as an opportunity to experiment with the Pride of Iowa and state qualifying meets upcoming.

“This meet gives us an opportunity close to the midseason to align with some things we’re possibly going to do for districts and Pride of Iowa that would be competitive in the conference as well as possibly state qualifying night,” Hardy said. “We looked at a night like this for an opportunity to see speed on the track, combinations not necessarily to score points, but what combinations might work when we’re looking at those upcoming bigger meets where we need to be more competitive on a bigger scale.”

Others were allowed to try their skills in other events.

“Some kids that normally do hurdles and long distance did other events,” Hardy said. “It gives them an opportunity to rejuvenate themselves, work on some other facets, sprints and open or another relay that they don’t normally do.”

The Eagles were second in the 4x800-meter relay and 4x400 relay, with Casey Walter second in the high jump. Gabe Nixon was third in the 400 and fourth in the 200. The sprint medley relay was fourth. Matthew Wittstock took fifth in the 400 hurdles and Brayden Martinez was sixth in the shot put.

“Gabe ran some good 800s. Casey continues to push for that 5-8 level,” Hardy said. “We saw some good things overall.”

Lenox was led by a second-place effort from the 4x100-meter relay and a third from the 4x400 relay. Blake Rychnovsky was fourth in the 3,200, Brenden Christensen was fourth in the 110 high hurdles. Aaron Schmitz was fifth in the 200 and sixth in the long jump,
