Virginia Luther Hilman, 85, of Creston passed away Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at Clearview Home in Clearfield.
Funeral celebration of life services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 19, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Creston. Pastor Tony Thurston will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery south of Creston. Open visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25, in Creston with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are to HCI Hospice in Creston and Union County Fair building campaign. Virginia May Overholtzer, daughter of Lowell (Red) and Juanita (Jimmerson) Overholtzer, was born Oct. 18, 1931, near Grand River. In 1934, they moved to Creston. In 1935, she had scarlet fever followed by mastoid surgery which affected her hearing the rest of her life. She graduated from Creston High School and American Institute of Business in Des Moines.
On May 21, 1949, she married Glen Edward Luther at the Creston First Christian Church parsonage. Three children were born to this marriage, Cathy Ann, Steven Glen and James Keith Luther. She worked part-time while the children were small, and helped with Luther Service bookwork. The family was active in Union County Saddle Club, 4-H clubs and youth sports. She was a 4-H leader, Saddle Club officer and member of Fair Board Wives and Fireflys. She and Glen constructed Country Court Mobile Home Park, and then with Don Miller as a partner, constructed L&M Mobile Estates. Virginia was manager of both parks. They enjoyed camping and traveling and made many friends through Holiday Ramblers Camping Clubs and Cozy Campers. She held many jobs, spending the last 21 working years as a service representative at Creston Social Security District Office. She retired in September 1987. They enjoyed 10 years of travel before Glen died suddenly Sept. 5, 1997.
She volunteered at Greater Community Hospital with hospice, respite, auxiliary and senior health insurance information program. After Glen’s death, she resigned as L&M manager, but continued with Country Court until 2000. She is a lifetime member of Green Valley Hospice Guild, Greater Community Auxiliary, National Association Retired Federal Employees and Centerville Woman’s Club. She was also a member of Union County Genealogical Society, Patches and Pieces Quilt Club, First Christian Church and Mary Circle.
On July 8, 2000, she married Emil Leonard Hilman at First Christian Church in Creston. They enjoyed life with family and friends at Emil’s home in Canada, wintering in Arizona and Iowa part of the year. Emil died Oct. 31, 2005, very suddenly. Virginia returned to Iowa. She moved to Prairie View Assisted Living in 2011 and then to Clearview Home in Clearfield in 2014.
Virginia is survived by her sons, Steven (wife Leslie) Luther and James Keith (wife Marcela) Luther, both of Creston; step-children, David (wife Joyce) Hilman of Sylvan Lake, AB, Marvin (wife Ruth-Anne) Hilman of McMinnville, Oregon, Stanley (wife Debbie) Hilman of Calgary, AB, Perry (wife Mary) Hilman, of Sylvan Lake, AB, Earl Hilman of Sylvan Lake, AB, James (wife Julie) Hilman of Lake Arrowhead, California, Calvin (wife Linda) Hilman of Sylvan Lake, AB, Linda (husband Pete) Levijoki of Frazee, Minnesota, and Vern (wife Barb) Hilman of Fort Fraser, BC; grandchildren, Clint (wife Polly) Luther, Cory (wife Tara) Luther, Cody Luther and Crystal (husband Greg) Still, all of Creston and James Keith (wife Laura) Luther Jr. of Ankeny; 15 great-grandchildren; 19 step-grandchildren; 23 step-great-grandchildren and sisters-in-law, Arlene Overholtzer of Creston and Annie Luther of Prescott.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Glen Luther in 1997; her second husband Emil Hilman in 2005; daughter Cathy Ann (husband Tom) Stickel; brother Carl Overholtzer; sisters, Janice Bartunek and Doris (husband Don) Trenkle and brothers-in-law, Gerald (wife Fannie) Luther and Richard Luther.
