Mick Landers, 51, of Creston died Thursday, April 13, 2017, at Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston.

Open visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 17, at Pearson Family Funeral Service and Cremation Center, 809 W. Montgomery St., in Creston. The family will be present from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday with the Fireman Honor Guard present. A celebration of life service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, at Crest Baptist Church in Creston with the Rev. Chuck Spindler officiating. Following the service, the funeral procession will proceed to Creston Fire Department for the firefighter’s “Last Call.” Inurnment will be at a later date in Union Chapel Cemetery in St. Charles. Memorial contributions may be directed to cancer support ministry at Crest Baptist Church or Creston Fire Department. Online condolences may be left at www.pearsonfuneralhomes.com.

Michael Joseph Landers, son of Michael Eugene and Linda Catherine (Ripperger) Landers, was born Sept. 3, 1965, in Des Moines. The family moved from the Des Moines area, and he was educated in East Union public schools. Mick graduated from East Union High School with the class of 1983. After graduation, Mick attended college at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado and then, Southwestern Community College in Creston. Mick earned an Associate of Arts degree in fire science in 1997.  

Mick began his career as a fireman while serving as a volunteer for Afton Fire Department from 1984-88. During this time, he also worked for the city of Afton.

On Oct. 9, 1988, Mick married Robin Claiser in Afton. Together, the couple had three children, Amber, Jessica and Ben. Robin and Mick divorced in 1997, after eight years of marriage. Mick worked a short time for the city of Winterset and also served as a volunteer fireman on Winterset Fire Department from February to October 1992. In late 1992, Mick worked as a full-time, career firefighter in Fort Dodge for one year. He was hired in 1993 by Creston Fire Department and was promoted to assistant chief in 2000. In addition to his duties in Creston, Mick also worked part-time for West Des Moines Fire Department until 2012.

On May 25, 2013, Mick married Linda Kilgore in Creston.

Mick was an active member of Crest Baptist Church where he previously served on the property committee and was part of cancer support ministry. He served on Crestmoor Golf Club Board of Directors. Mick was involved in the Iowa Firefighters Association and served as president of the Union County EMS Association. Mick was a Certified Firefighter II, Officer I, Inspector I, Instructor I, EMT-B and trained as a hazardous materials technician.

Mick is survived by his wife Linda Landers of Creston; children, Amber Landers of Kansas City, Missouri, Jessica Landers of Des Moines and Ben Landers of Portland, Oregon; step-children, Erin (Eric) Millslagle of Cromwell and Reid (Denise) Bierle of Mason City; step-grandchildren, Max and Morgan Kilgore, Myah Lanteri, Gunnar, Gavin and Aiden Millslagle, Taylor, Carter, Rylan and Langden Bierle; parents, Michael and Linda Landers of Afton; mother-in-law LaVern Strickland of Stanton; brothers, Allan (Toni) Landers of Afton, Bryan (Lynda) Landers of Savannah, Missouri, and Jack (Leslie) Landers of Baltimore, Maryland; brother-in-law Lyle (Julie) Strickland of Stanton; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Mick was preceded in death by his grandparents, Giles and Mildred Ripperger and Jack and Mardena Landers and step-grandfather Dallas Glazebrook.
