Jim McGuire, 88, of Thayer died Thursday, April 13, 2017, at his home in Thayer.

Celebration of life services will be 10 a.m. Monday, April 17, at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25, in Creston. The Rev. Jim Morris will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery south of Thayer. Visitation with family present will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 16, at the funeral home. Military graveside rites will be given by Theodore J. Martens Post No. 1797, Creston V.F.W. In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the family for restoration of Oak Hill Cemetery. James William McGuire, son of Murel McGuire and Alice Maude (White) McGuire, was born June 7, 1928, in Pleasant Township in Union County. He graduated from Thayer High School in 1945. He farmed for several years, before entering the United States Army. Jim was discharged in 1954 and continued serving in the Army Reserves. Jim went on to study at Reisch American School of Auctioneering in Mason City and graduated in 1960.

On May 16, 1964, Jim married Bonnie Thompson in Red Oak. They settled on a farm south of Thayer and farmed all of their married life. Jim was also a livestock dealer and auctioneer with McGuire Auction Service. 

Jim is survived by his wife Bonnie McGuire of Thayer; daughter Jo Anne (Mike) Duckworth of Creston; sons, Bill (Diane) McGuire of Thayer, Richard (Patty) McGuire of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, David (Rita) McGuire of Thayer and John McGuire of Afton; daughter-in-law Robin Vogel of Arispe; sister Darlene Kinneman of Kansas City, Missouri; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. 

Jim was preceded in death by his son Ray Vogel; parents; brothers, Lester, Carl and Frank McGuire and brother-in-law Bob Kinneman.
