P.E.O.

Chapter LG P.E.O. met April 18 at the home of Nancy James with Carolyn Downing serving as co-hostess. After a breakfast brunch, 14 members responded to roll call.

Marcia Riley collected applications for 2017 scholarships in cooperation with the AZ P.E.O representatives, and the scholarship committee will select deserving applicants. The successful P.E.O. omelet dinner fundraiser allows for up to $4,000 to be distributed this year. The project has been a valuable event for the community to support scholarships for local students. The scholarships will be presented May 5 at Creston Community High School awards program.

On May 6, the trunk sale, hosted by AZ P.E.O. chapter and supported by the LG Chapter, includes plant, baked goods and crafts for sale from the trunks of member’s cars at the restored Creston Depot from 8 a.m. to noon. Rainy day arrangements are to hold the sale at Congregate mealsite. This is a scholarship fundraising event. Sign-up sheets are available, but all P.E.O. member donations will be accepted.

Linda Linch presented the program on the P.E.O. flower, the marguerite daisy, a white petal, yellow center daisy. She informed the group of the many virtues this flower symbolizes, and gave interesting facts including 200 species of the daisy exist around the world.

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, at the Windrow meeting room with 25 members and one guest. President Chris Eaton presided, Jim Nelson gave the prayer and Craig Mittag was the finemaster.

The program was given by Zach Gunsolley, Union County Engineer. He discussed new ways of improving Union County gravel roads and testing new ways of making them last longer.

Alpha Sigma Master

Alpha Sigma Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met April 13 with Cheryl McClure as hostess. This was the first meeting after winter break, with members having returned from the south. Roll call was “Did you have a good winter?”

McClure presided at the business meeting. Information about the state convention June 9-11 in Waterloo was shared. Voting was conducted on choice of state project, and a contribution made. Support was also given for the International Endowment Fund and several charities it supports.

Pat Fils was crowned as “Christmas Angel,” and presented with a flower and gift certificate.

Loretta Kelly and Marilyn Larimore were appointed nominating committee. Larimore, service chairman, outlined plans for making May baskets for assisted living residents.

Kelly announced plans for Founders Day observance April 27.

The program was given by McClure. She shared writings on “What Grandmas are Made Of” and “The Legend of the Leprechaun.”

Iowa Alpha Gamma

The Iowa Alpha Gamma chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa met April 10 at the home of Pam Dunham. Guest was Barb Hudson, who shared her love of fabric with a collection of beautiful quilts.

President Colleen Gangestad conducted the business meeting. The 30th International Convention of Alpha Delta Kappa will be held July 12-15 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Project TEACH has contributed more than $13,000 toward educational opportunities in Haiti. Gangestad reported the by-laws revision was approved by state officers. Book scholarship applications were reviewed. Scholarships will be presented by Linda Huffman and Carolyn Biere May 5 at Creston Community High School awards assembly.

The 5:30 p.m. May 8 meeting will be held at Pizza Ranch.

DWF Executive Committee

The DWF Executive Committee met April 6 at First Christian Church Disciples of Christ with eight members attending. The meeting opened with everyone reciting the DWF prayer. Secretary Twila Brant read the minutes and they were approved. Treasurer’s report was given by Barb Jennings and approved.

Old business: DWF had a pie sale to replenish the scholarship fund. The young people helped serve water and lemonade at the Lenten service. They were very helpful and had fun doing this.

New business: Coffee and cookies will be served between the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Easter service. There will be an Easter egg hunt after the 8 a.m. service.

The group will go to the board to see if the church would be willing to purchase the cookies. The Rebecca Circle will be hostess for the May breakfast. The breakfast will be 10 a.m. Thursday, May 4. Joyce Burkhead resigned from chairman of the kitchen. She made a suggestion to ask Bonnie Pelke to take this position. Shirley Ray is fixing little Easter gifts for the children.

Committee report on evangelism: Rhonda Vogel will be having a meeting with the minister. No other committee reports.

A motion by Averil Lyman, second by Pam Richie to adjourn and approved. The next meeting will be 10 a.m. Thursday, May 11, at the church. Meeting closed with everyone reciting the DWF benediction.

Kent Dinner Club

Kent Dinner Club met April 13 with three attending.

Next meeting will be 5:30 p.m. May 11 at Pizza Ranch. All are welcome.

P.E.O.

The regular business meeting of P.E.O. Chapter AZ was held April 4 at Carroll Family Chiropractic with 19 members present.

Cindy Mitchell gave a program regarding volunteer opportunities at the hospice home.

Refreshments were served by hostess Linda Carroll and co-hostess Joan Chubick.

The next regular meeting will be held May 2 with Marilyn Ide as hostess and Judy Eklund as co-hostess.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met April 19.

Canasta winners were Wanda Nash, first; Janet Kessler, second; and Joan Chubick, third.

Chubick won the door prize.

Sherry and Penni will host cards and chatter Wednesday, April 26.

VFW Post 1797

VFW Post 1797 met April 11 at the Elks Lodge in Creston. Thirteen members and guests were present for dinner.

Sr. Vice Frank Riley called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. with 13 members present.

The post draped the charter for veteran Tom Rotert. Minutes and QM reports were read and approved.

Service officers reported 18 hours for community service, 19 hours for hospital and 18 hours for honor guard, for a total of 55 hours. The post also traveled 300 miles for veterans.

In old business, an update on Union County Honor Flight was discussed. There was a second call for new officers for years 2017-18.

In new business, new officers for year 2017-18 were named. They are Commander, Gary O’Daniels; Sr. Vice, Frank Riley; Jr. Vice, Jim Flowers; Quartermaster, Dennis Abel; Surgeon, Craig Dresback; Chaplain, Rick Leonard; Judge Advocate, Robert Jungst; and Trustees, Ron Jackson, John Parkins and Ron Gordon.

Memorial Day services will be held 8 a.m. Monday, May 29, with the DAR at McKinley Park, 9:30 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery and 10:45 a.m. at Graceland Cemetery.

The next district meeting will be Saturday, April 29, in Ottumwa.

The meeting adjourned at 8 p.m. The next meeting will be Tuesday, May 9, at the Elks with dinner at 6 p.m. and meeting follows at 7 p.m. All veterans are encouraged to attend.
