EU High School wins $500 for after prom

AFTON – John Stoddard Cancer Center has been educating high school students on the importance of preventing melanoma and other types of skin cancer. April 1 marked the end of the It’s Your Skin Iowa pledge and Instagram contests.

East Union High School and Oskaloosa High School are each winners of $500 for their after-prom parties or whatever administration sees fit, as their schools had the highest percentage of their student bodies take the pledge.

Overall, 795 high school students in 25 participating schools took the pledge not to tan from Jan. 1 to April 1. This project was made possible through a grant from the Iowa Cancer Consortium, and expanded to other areas of the state by partnering with UnityPoint Health affiliates in Cedar Rapids, Dubuque and Waterloo, along with the American Cancer Society.
