Satisfactory beginning for Panther track and field squads

SHENANDOAH — Outdoor track season is here and the Creston track and field squads got repetitions in against teams from the southern half of the Hawkeye 10 Conference.

The Creston girls finished third with 57 team points, a number that coach Clay Arnold was none too worried about given the number of events leaders Glenwood and Shenandoah were able to put athletes in.

"I thought it was a good first outdoor meet. I saw some girls step up," Arnold said.

Arnold was especially impressed with the performance of several of his runners.

Danielle Castillo stood out.

"Tonight was the best meet that Danielle has ever had," Arnold said.

Castillo set a PR in the 100 meter dash with a time of 14.22, good for seventh place. She PR'd in the 200 meter dash with a time of 30.93, and placed second in the 100 meter hurdles by finishing in 18.05 seconds.

Brielle Baker took home first place in the 800 with a time of 2:35.70, almost two seconds in front of Glenwood's Kate Kaufman, 2:37.62.

The relay units performed admirably, while the Panther girls pulled out a thrilling 4x100 race.

Creston pulled out a come-from behind victory with strong a strong third and fourth legs from Kesia Stewart and Cayla Maitlen, with Maitlen just barely edging out Clarinda's Cynthia Best at the end. Creston won with a time of 54.25 to 54.40 for Clarinda.

According to Arnold, Stewart and Maitlen "absolutely destroyed" the last two legs.

"We were right in there but the best girl from Clarinda is a stud and we've been battling her for years now," Arnold said.

Arnold was satisfied with the performances of Allivea Skarda, and Brittany Linch, and Emma Hanson added to the depth of several relay teams.

In the field, Hannah Hood was tops in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 9.25 inches. Faith Wilson took fourth in the discus with a throw of 94 feet, 6 inches.

As strong as the girls were in places, it was more obvious to coach Arnold who slacked some on their training in spring break as well as who is keeping their workout regimen intense.

"All in all we saw a lot of good things," Arnold said. "Those girls who were working hard for us over spring break were stepping up back, especially in the sprints."

Outdoor meet number one came with lessons as well.

"We've got to get some other girls in better shape. Especially in the middle distances," Arnold said.

Coach Arnold said that seven to eight JV girls will participate at Clarke Thursday.

Boys get in first competition

The Creston boys took fifth at the south division meet, earning 11 team points.

Zac Hague's second place discus throw of 122 feet, 8 inches was as impressive as any of the individual performances for the boys.

Dalten Bierle took third in the 800 meter run and fifth in the 100 meter dash.

Bierle, Jared Moreland, Ashton Wills and Camden Peterson ran the 4x400 and took fifth with a time of 4:09.69.

"Coach Birchard and myself are proud of the boys," coach Pat Schlapia said. "They competed and showed heart. All six boys did a very good job for our first competition of the season. We look forward to improving from these first steps."

The boys will be in competition at Winterset Friday.
