One-win week one

The Southwestern women’s softball team got its first action of the year in within the last week, winning one of five games in the process.

Southwestern brought the lumber to the yard for Wednesday’s game with Morton College (Chicago), which it won 15-6 by run rule.

Kassie Craig went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run, and JoHana McGuire hit three hits in four at-bats which included three singles and a run driven in.

Kaitlyn Schiefen struck out 10 batters in the circle.

Schiefen did experience some struggles in the circle over the first five games, but displayed some skills that Cassady is anxious to improve.

“I would like to see the amount of walks that she gives out lowered,” Southwestern coach Paige Cassady said. “But overall she’s been very consistent. I like that she’s letting her defense work behind her.”

The Spartans had their bats warmed up to start the season, even in a 10-9 loss to Jackson State.

Against Jackson State, Schiefen and Chelsi Sams both went 3-for-5 with Sams registering two RBIs.

They then went silent.

“Quality pitching had a lot to do with it, and we need to find a little more consistency with our lineup.”

Southwestern lost its next three games to Jackson State, 8-0 and Volunteer State twice; 7-0 and 12-1.

Cheyenne Haveman,Sams, Abby Davis and Kassie Craig each recorded a base hit in the 7-0 loss to Vol State.

Southwestern’s five-inning 12-1 loss to Vol State was another struggle, as the Spartans managed six hits.

Davis had two of those hits and the team’s lone RBI. Fallyn Beemer, Sams, Amanda Volner and Stephanie VandeKamp recorded SWCC’s other hits in the loss.

UP NEXT — Southwestern (1-4), hosts Iowa Central (20-7) for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday. Sunday, the Spartans host a twin billing with Iowa Lakes (13-4) Sunday at noon.
