CARSPA

Creston Area Retired School Personnel Association (CARSPA) held its meeting March 14 at Crest Ridge Estates in Creston. Following breakfast with a number of residents, 11 members enjoyed presentations given by several speech students from Orient-Macksburg Community School. They were Ashlyn Kralik, Brooklyn Sammons, Izak Hribal and Vihn Nguyen. Their teacher and advisor, Jackie Stack, accompanied them. Iowa state speech competition is a goal for speech students this time of year.

A business meeting was conducted. Members’ monetary contribution of $13 was collected and donated to Lenox Elementary School to be used by the school nurse in assisting families to meet the personal needs of their children.

The next meeting will be April 11.

GFWC/Iowa Bancroft History Assembly

GFWC/Iowa Bancroft History Assembly met March 6 in the MAP room at Greater Regional Medical Center. Five life members and six active members were present. After the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, President Jo Ann Nurnberg called the meeting to order.

The minutes of the last meeting was approved as written and the treasurer’s report was placed on file for audit.

Corrections to the Adventures in Reading list were reported.

Motion carried to elect the following new officers: Marisue Lewis, president; Sandy Oswald, vice president; Joan Chubick, treasurer; Kay Raymond, secretary/journalist; Beth Perry, corresponding secretary; Sandy Oswald, historian; and Jo Ann Nurnberg, parliamentarian.

The new yearbook committee consists of JoAnn Nurnberg, Sandy Oswald and Kay Raymond.

GFWC SW District Director Peg Anderson updated us about upcoming meetings and GFWC news.

Program ideas were discussed for the coming year.

The Club Collect was recited and the meeting was adjourned. The next meeting will be April 3.

Joan Chubick spoke about the history of railroads in Iowa and Barbara Bjorn on Iowa capitals.

Creston Ladies Literary Circle

Creston Ladies Literary Circle met at the home of Vera Fengler with 15 members present. President Vanita Moberg conducted the business of the day. Sherry McKie discussed options for next year’s book reviews. Judy Woods will report on nominations at the next meeting•.

Jean Mark introduced Stephani Finley, the reviewer for the day.

Finley presented the book, “Sylvia Plath,” by Linda W. Wagner Martin. The book was a biography of the life of Plath who was a prolific writer starting at the age of 9. Her most notable writing was the book, “Bell Jar.” Her life was filled with many ups and downs. She was a perfectionist looking for the perfect life. She suffered from many maladies including depression, boyfriend problems, desperation, suicidal tendencies, jealousies and inability to find the perfect life. At the age of 30, Plath ended her life by suicide.

The hostess served an array of delicacies. The next meeting will be at the home of Connie Purdum.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met March 15.

Canasta winners were Barb Veitz, first; Gwen Sandeman, second; and Cheri Lilly, third.

Lilly won the door prize.

Joan Chubick will host cards and chatter Wednesday, March 22.

GFWC/Iowa Progressive Chautauqua Circle

The GFWC/Iowa Progressive Chautauqua Circle Study Club met March 14 at the Pizza Ranch.

An entertaining program was presented by Creston Community High School speech students of the entries they will be performing at the state competition. Junior Bailey Hopkins gave a persuasive speech titled, “Will you be my Valentine?” Junior Olivia Cramer gave an after dinner speech regarding a funeral home titled, “Coffin Talk.” Sophomore Riley Beard presented an informative speech titled, “Soy Answers.” Sophomore Marika Chubick performed a musical theater singing presentation, “Pulled.” Senior Jake Hitz performed in the musical theater category and sang, “Javert’s Suicide,” from the musical “Les Miserables.” Junior Clayton Davis told and acted an entertaining short story titled, “Once Upon a Motorcycle, Dude.”

President Edsall called the meeting to order at 2:20 p.m. The 16 members in attendance recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Edsall reported no new members joined this year and expressed the need to form a nominating committee to name the new officers. It was discussed to go by length of service and to start over on the membership list, with Joyce Anderson having the most longevity.

Roll call was taken with the members responding by naming their favorite musical. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and approved. Pat Butcher reported that she had presented gift cards to two wounded women warriors. Butcher also reported 14 scholarship applications had been received and were being reviewed.

Betty Wallace announced the next bloodmobile will be April 24. Jerrie Henderson reported the domestic violence office had moved and now had more space. Linda Huffman reported the scholarship projects had been reviewed and submitted.

The members read “A Collect for Club Women,” and the meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m. The next meeting will be on April 25 at Peg Anderson’s home.
