Accolades for SWCC athletes, success for area college athletes

all-conference

LAMONI — Graceland University Wrestling’s Kruz Adamson of Creston, earned third team All-Conference honors as named by the Heart of America Athletic Conference. The all-conference teams, selected by the league’s coaches, were based on results in the round robin dual matches, which were completed prior to the Heart Championships on January 28.

Briley, Bears go

4-5 at Cowtown

FORT WORTH, TEXAS — Creston native Taylor Briley, who now plays as a freshman softball player at Des Moines Area Community College in Boone, had two hits in a 10-1 Bears’ win over Pratt (Kan.) Community College on Feb 18.

The Bears went 4-1 over their first weekend of play of of the season, falling only to defending NJCAA national champion Butler County Community College by a score of 4-1.

Briley was also a part of a no-hitter on the 17th by Adel native Molly Jacobson. Jacobson’s no-hitter came against Oklahoma State Community College in a 10-0 victory.

Briley is now 2-for-8 on the season, with an RBI and a run scored.

Thomsen starts

strong for Grand

DES MOINES — Alli Thomsen, a Creston native and multi-sport star, is playing for the Grand View University tennis team. The Vikings have started the late-winter/spring portion of their schedule with three wins and a loss, and are 6-3-1 since the start of the fall semester.

Thomsen and number two doubles partner Madison Trow of Urbandale defeated Rica Mizero and Sydney Gunderson of Buena Vista University by a score of 8-1 on Feb 13.

Three Spartans recognized by ICCAC

Southwestern baseball players Manuel Hazoury and Ian Torres were recognized by the ICCAC Tuesday.

Hazoury, a sophomore first baseman from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, earned conference player of the week honors for his performance from Feb. 13-19.

Hazoury went 4-for-12 with a home run, two RBI and two runs as the Spartans started the season with four straight losses.

Torres, the 6-6 260-pound right-handed sophomore pitcher from Ponce, Puerto Rico, was named conference pitcher of the week after pitching three innings of scoreless ball in which he allowed just one hit.

The number two-ranked Southwestern basketball team’s energetic sophomore big man Lavon Hightower, from Charlotte, North Carolina, garnered ICCAC Division II conference player of the week honors for the week of Feb. 13-19.

Hightower put 14 points and grabbed five rebounds in a 93-71 home win for Southwestern over Central (Neb) on Feb. 15. He also scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the Spartans 81-61 win over Ellsworth on Feb. 18.

Hightower’s honor marks the ninth time out of 16 possible chances this season that a Spartan player has earned the award. It’s the second time Hightower has earned the distinction this season.
