MOUNT AYR — Two people died after a fire burned their house this morning in Benton, about 8 miles west of Mount Ayr.

Linda Gale Haley, 68, and her husband, Robert Fey Haley, 72, both of Benton, died on scene after the fire 3:02 a.m. today at their home at 205 Main St., in Benton.

According to a Ringgold County Sheriff report, Ringgold County 911 received a call for a house fire at the Haley residence. Mount Ayr firefighters arrived at the home to find it engulfed in smoke and fire.

Fire crews entered the home and recovered the bodies of Linda and Robert. Fire crews administered CPR until an ambulance arrived on scene. Both Linda and Robert were deceased on scene and recognized by emergency responders.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but Mount Ayr Fire Chief Mike Wimer said it started in the southeast corner of the house. Firefighters were on scene for more than six hours, and Wimer said the house was a total loss.

“The fire marshal’s office has been here, but we might never find an actual cause,” Wimer said. “Right now, it’s undetermined, still under investigation.”

Assisting Mount Ayr Fire Department were Diagonal, Ellston, Kellerton and Tingley fire departments, Ringgold County Sheriff’s Office and Ringgold County Hospital personnel.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
