Donna Jo Spare will give a plea during a scheduled plea hearing 10 a.m. Feb. 24 at Union County Courthouse. Spare was charged on a Union County warrant for homicide by vehicle, a class B felony, in August.

According to Union County Attorney Tim Kenyon, the plea date “presses the hold button” on the proceedings. After a pretrial conference held Friday, instead of continuing with the original trial date scheduled for Feb. 27, the plea date was scheduled. What happens next is determined by the plea Spare will give.

“At this time, at this point, a guilty plea is expected or anticipated on Feb. 24,” Kenyon said.

Spare, 61, of Afton was charged in August after an investigation lasting approximately eight months. According to a Union County Sheriff report, at about 9:15 p.m. Jan. 16, 2016, Spare was driving a 2001 Chevrolet on Highway 34 east of Creston. Near the intersection of Highway 34 and Jaguar Avenue, Spare crossed over the center line into the westbound lane of traffic. Spare’s vehicle struck a vehicle operated by Deanne Lee Hoffman.

Hoffman died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision.

Subsequent investigation by Iowa State Highway Patrol officers indicated the blood alcohol concentration of Spare was in excess of .08 at the time of the collision.

Spare was released on $25,000 bond.
