VFW Post 1797
VFW Post 1797 met Jan. 10 at the Elks in Creston. Eighteen members and guests were present for dinner.
Commander Gary O’Daniels called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. with 18 members present. The post draped the charter for veterans Al Hoepker, John Weddle, Donald Weis and Clifford Purdum.
Minutes and QM reports were read and approved.
Service officers reported 14 hours for community service, 40 hours for the hospital, 50 hours for honor guard and 27 hours to the Christmas Basket, for a total of 131 hours. The VFW also traveled 288 miles for veterans.
In old business, certificates and checks were issued last month to Vice of Democracy and Patriot Pen essay winners. Updates on honor flights were discussed.
In new business, the Elks Lodge will have a hot beef dinner Friday, Jan. 27, with proceeds helping fund Union County Honor Flight. Cost is $10. Honor flight updates included $2,400 has been raised to date with $ 6,200 needed. FBLA is donating proceeds from T-shirt sales from Jan. 24 Creston/O-M wrestling tournament. Anyone wishing to donate should contact Tom Hawks at the veterans’ office at 641-782-1723. This flight is for Union County veterans.
Dates of interest were Saturday, Jan. 14, for District 4 meeting; Wednesday, Jan. 18, for Veterans on the Hill; and Saturday, Jan 21, was State Mid-Winter Conference in Des Moines. A motion was made and approved to donate $100 to the Creston Bloodmobile. Meeting adjourned at 8 p.m. The next meeting will be Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the Elks with dinner at 6 p.m. and meeting to follow at 7 p.m. All veterans are encouraged to attend.

Catholic Daughters
Court Joan of Arc No. 428 met Jan. 10 in the church hall following Mass. Dinner was served by the committee of Betty Baker, Artie Mullin and Susan Kosman. Mark O’Riley and Sharon Snodgrass presented a program on the Creston Area Food Pantry. They explained how food is collected and purchased for the pantry and the number of people served. Food is distributed on Sundays from noon to 2 p.m.
The business meeting began with a prayer. Alice Reed gave the treasurer’s report. Teresa Weis made the motion to approve the report. Marsha Mohr seconded and motion carried. Baker made the motion that we give a donation to the food pantry. Pat Pokorny seconded and motion carried. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Mary McElroy made the motion to approve, and Carolyn Downing seconded. Baker gave the card report. We received a thank-you from Father. We also received a thank-you from our Christmas family. Retta passed around a letter she had received from our state regent.
Joanne Gibson gave a report on CRHP to be held Jan. 28-29. Anita reported that she had taken forms to the school for the education contest. She reminded us that Catholic Daughters are also eligible. We have received a paper to send in with delegates and alternates to the state convention to be held May 5-7 in Ames. We’re entitled to three delegates and six alternates. Circle of Love report forms were handed out and we are to fill them out and bring to the next meeting. Pokorny reminded us of the Right to Life Memorial to be held Jan. 22 at Calvary Cemetery.
The group will prepare cookie plates for shut-ins at the next meeting. Everyone is asked to bring two dozen cookies. Alice Reed and Carol McKee won door prizes. We recited our membership prayer to close the meeting. Baker made the motion to adjourn. Joanne Gibson seconded and meeting adjourned.

CARSPA
Creston Area Retired School Personnel Assoc. (CARSPA) held its meeting Jan. 10 at the Del Richardson Conference Room at Greater Regional Medical Center.
Following breakfast, 10 members enjoyed a presentation on “Greater Regional Hospice” by Sara Adamson. HCI Hospice Care Services serves 16 counties in southern and central Iowa. If someone has only six months or less to live, and no more can be done medically to provide a cure for said person, professionals and volunteers at Greater Regional Hospice can assist him or her. The majority of patients served suffer from heart disease, COPD and cancer. With hospice care, pain and symptoms are managed, help with daily needs is provided and family members and caregivers are also supported. This holistic approach to one’s care helps provide peace of mind and allows one to focus on what matters most. Assistance provided to each patient varies with the maximum support being five days per week and two hours per day.
Assistance by volunteers comes in a variety of ways. You might talk and read with patients, perform light housekeeping duties, run errands or transport patients to appointments, bring pets to visit or help with yard work. Each volunteer brings his or her own special skills and talents to benefit patients and their families in a variety of ways. The importance of having a power of attorney to manage financial and health issues when someone becomes impaired was discussed. Everyone should be aware of both.
A business meeting followed. Members’ monetary contribution of $15 was collected and donated to Nodaway Valley Elementary School in Greenfield to be used by the school nurse in assisting a family or families to meet the personal needs of their children. The next meeting will be Feb. 14.

Mary Circle
Mary Circle of First Christian Church met Jan. 19 at the church. There were nine members present.
President Fils opened the meeting with the disciple women’s prayer.
Joyce Burkhead read the minutes of the last meeting. Barb gave the treasurer’s report. They were both approved as read.
Old business was discussed.
New business included salads needed for SWCC basketball dinner Jan. 26 at the church and Mary Circle is to serve coffee fellowship Feb. 19.
Rhonda Vogel gave the program from the Women of the Bible, “The Alabaster Vase.”
RoEmma made a motion to adjourn and Alice seconded the motion.
Next meeting will be Feb. 16 at the church with Joyce as hostess.
