First conference win for Spartan women

IOWA FALLS — The first conference win for the Southwestern Community College women's basketball team came as a result of strong play from the not-so-usual suspects.

Chelsi Sams poured in 20 points to lead the way, and Eriayana Frazier's 17 points added up as Southwestern won at Ellsworth 75-62.

Frazier finished around the bucket and benefited from her aggressive play by finishing at the free throw line.

"Chelsi played well on the inside and outside, hitting three's and attacking the basket," Southwestern coach Addae Houston said.

Yaasmyn Spivey added 12 points and Keaundra Washington scored 10.

Julanie Carter and Fallyn Beemer, for whom putting up double-figure and even 20-point scoring efforts has not been uncommon, did not play poorly but did not have to score for the Spartans to have success.

Houston was encouraged by several of his players stepping up for the Spartans to grab the team's first conference win this season.

UP NEXT — Southwestern (10-6, 1-2) hosts DMACC (15-3, 2-1) Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Houston expects to see some full-court press looks and half-court traps from the Bears' defense. DMACC enters the game ranked seventh in NJCAA Division II.
