Adair County Sheriff

Alexander Odell Hicklin, 27, of Des Moines was charged with driving under suspension, possession of drug paraphernalia, prescription drug violation and second-offense operating while intoxicated 8:10 a.m. Jan. 5 in Adair County.

According to an Adair County Sheriff report, officers were notified of an erratic driver in a blue Dodge truck eastbound on Interstate 80 from the 70-mile marker. Officer were able to make contact with the vehicle near the 85-mile marker. The vehicle exited the roadway onto the next exit. The vehicle came to a stop and the driver quickly exited the driver’s seat and looked at the rear tires. Officers then activated the rear lights only and made contact with the driver, asking if everything was alright.

The driver was identified as Hicklin. Further investigation showed Hicklin had a license that was revoked for a previous drug conviction. Hicklin was found to be in possession of a controlled substance, as well as multiple syringes, a pop can and spoon used to take methadone pills. While charging Hicklin, a bottle of prescription pills was located in the passenger door he attempted to hide in the door of the patrol vehicle. Hicklin admitted to putting the methadone pills there. Hicklin had constricted pupils and showed signs of impairment.

Hicklin was transported to Adair County Sheriff’s Office, where officers administered field sobriety tests. Officers also administered lack of convergence and modified Romberg tests. Officers then requested a urine sample, which Hicklin refused to give.

Hicklin was released on $2,000 bond.

Patrick Russell Darling, 53, of Greenfield was charged with simple assault and simple domestic abuse assault 7:57 p.m. Jan. 6 in Adair County.

According to an Adair County Sheriff report, Darling did assault a female victim by elbowing her in the nose, causing it to bleed because of a nose ring in the side of the nose that was struck. Darling also struck another female victim in the face, causing pain but no visible injury.

Darling was released on his own recognizance.

Patrick Thomas Lester, 30, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, was charged with operating while intoxicated, child endangerment with bodily injury, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to secure a child, failure to wear a seat belt, violation of financial liability, open container in a motor vehicle, reckless driving and excessive speed 11:53 p.m. Saturday in Adair County.

According to an Adair County Sheriff report, Lester caused a three-vehicle accident on Interstate 80 east of the 82-mile marker. Officers had been trying to catch up with a vehicle in the accident because of previous complaints of excessive speed and reckless driving. Officers were advised that vehicle struck other vehicles, causing the accident.

Officers observed Lester having bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech and a strong odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage coming from his person. Lester consented to standard field sobriety testing and showed indicators of impairment. Lester said he had been drinking whiskey and rated himself a 6-7 on a scale of 0-10, with zero being completely sober and 10 being the most drunk he has ever been. Lester consented to a preliminary breath test with a blood-alcohol content more than .08. Lester consented to a DataMaster test with a blood-alcohol content result of .176.

During the investigation of the accident, two jars containing a green, leafy substance, oil and cookies believed to contain marijuana were located. A glass pipe was also located.

A male minor was injured in the accident. The minor was transported to Blank Children’s hospital in Des Moines. The minor had severe lacerations to the head and a possible broken wrist.

Lester was being held on $5,000 bond.
