AREA ROUNDUP: NV girls hoops strong in Saturday win

GREENFIELD — Nodaway Valley executed in all phases of the game leading to a 74-30 win over Clarke Saturday in non-conference girls basketball.

The Wolverines shot 31-of-55 from the floor. On defense, they held the Lady Indians to 10-of-52 shooting.

“We had a lot of really good execution about a lot of different things,” said Nodaway Valley coach Tom Thompson. “We’re excited about that.”

Nodaway Valley received points from eight players. Josie Clarke led the way with a game-high 19 points, along with 12 rebounds. Paige McElfish added 17 points and 13 rebounds.

McElfish scored her 1,000-career point in Friday’s win over Pleasantville. Also Friday, Mount Ayr’s Kelcie Shields scored her 1,000th point in the Raiderettes win over Martensdale-St. Marys.

Annie Herr and Natalie Daugherty each had nine points, with all nine of Daugherty’s points coming from 3-point range.

UP NEXT — Nodaway Valley (8-1) hosts Bedford (2-8) Tuesday in Pride of Iowa Conference play and is at Interstate 35 (6-4) Thursday.

O-M boys win on road

MOULTON — Orient-Macksburg’s boys basketball team staged a furious rally to earn a 55-53 win over Moulton-Udell Saturday in Bluegrass Conference play.

The Bulldogs trailed 45-32 entering the fourth quarter. Orient-Macksburg outscored Moulton-Udell 23-8 in the final eight minutes.

Orient-Macksburg led 11-4 after the first quarter and 19-18 at halftime.

Dylan Nichols led the Bulldogs with 22 points. Noah Nichols scored 11 points, while Izak Hribal added 10 points.

UP NEXT — Orient-Macksburg (4-6) was at Audubon Monday.

Olin’s big night leads

Clarke past NV

GREENFIELD — Nodaway Valley’s defense had no answer for Clarke’s Brandyne Olin in Saturday’s non-conference boys basketball game.

The Indians senior set the Clarke single-game scoring record with a career-high 45 points as the Indians topped the Wolverines 92-76.

Olin was 14-of-17 overall, including 6-of-8 from three-point range. He added 11-of-14 at the free throw line.

The Indians had four in double figures. Troy Morgan had 15 points. Grant Wishon had 11 and Lenny Peavy added 10.

Clarke led 32-19 after one quarter. Nodaway Valley cut it to 3, 46-43 at halftime.

The Wolverines tied it early in the third quarter, 48-48. The Indians outscored the Wolverines 18-6 to end the third and take a 66-54 lead into the fourth.

Spencer Lamb led Nodaway Valley with 26 points, along with seven rebounds, three assists. Beau Weinheimer had 14 points and five assists. Tyler Vandewater added eight points.

UP NEXT — Nodaway Valley (5-3) hosts Bedford (5-3) Tuesday and is at Interstate 35 Thursday.

FRIDAY BOYS: Murray caps perfect week

MURRAY — Murray’s boys basketball closed out the a strong first week to 2017 with a 74-42 win over Lamoni Friday in Bluegrass Conference play.

The Mustangs jumped out to an 18-8 lead after one quarter, then took control with a 22-7 second quarter to lead 40-15 lead at halftime.

Boles powered the offense with 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting. He added seven rebounds and four assists. Simmons had 11 points and eight rebounds. Keller had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Held added eight points.

Murray (9-0) is at Seymour on Tuesday and hosts East Union Thursday.

Interstate 35 surges late, tops Lenox

TRURO — Interstate 35 and Lenox traded blows in the first half of Friday’s Pride of Iowa Conference boys basketball game.

The Roadrunners delivered the knockdown blows early in the fourth quarter then had enough to hold on for an 84-73 win.

The Tigers and Roadrunners traded basket for basket in the second quarter. The lead traded hands nine times in the second eight minutes. Interstate 35 scored five straight to end the half with a 47-42 lead.

“It had to be exciting to watch,” said Lenox coach Jesse Cox. “Myself and Mr. Rankin (Interstate 35 coach Nate Rankin) asked if we could play a little defense. Both teams were effective.”

Interstate 35 ended the third quarter and started the fourth on a 24-7 run to seal put the game away.

UP NEXT — Lenox (4-6) hosts Mount Ayr (1-9) Tuesday in Pride of Iowa play.

Pleasntville downs NV in defensive slugfest

GREENFIELD — Defenses controlled much of the game, but visiting Pleasantville held the edge on the glass and eventually the scoreboard in a 54-38 win over Nodaway Valley Friday in Pride of Iowa Conference boys basketball play.

Neither team shot particularly well, but the Trojans outrebounded the Wolverines 32-18.

Pleasantville led 13-10 after one quarter, 27-19 at halftime and 37-27 after three quarters.

The Trojans’ Mac Harken led all scorers with 16 points.

Spencer Thompson led Nodaway Valley with 11 points. Spencer Lamb had 10 points and seven rebounds. Beau Weinheimer added eight points and seven steals.

Strong start leads SW Valley boys to win

CORNING — A red hot start sparked Southwest Valley’s boys basketball team to a 78-42 win over Wayne Friday in Pride of Iowa Conference play.

The Timberwolves led 18-4 after the first quarter. Southwest Valley extended the lead to 38-16 at halftime.

Five Timberwolves reached double figures. Trenton Drake led the way with 16 points on 8-of-8 shooting, to go with seven rebounds. Chance Cobb had 15 points. Scott Palmer scored 13 points, Grant Maurer had 12 points and Wyatt McAlpin added 10 points.

UP NEXT — Southwest Valley (6-4) is at East Union (7-3) Tuesday in Pride of Iowa Conference play.

Blue Devils top Raiders

MARTENSDALE — Martensdale-St. Mary’s offense clicked much of the way in a 60-20 win over Mount Ayr Friday in Pride of Iowa Conference boys basketball.

The Blue Devils led 14-6 after one quarter and 34-8 at halftime.

The Raider offense could not find much traction.

Dawson Frost, Jacob McCreary and John Young each had four points for the Raiders.

AREA GIRLS BASKETBALL FRIDAY

Shields reaches milestone in Mount Ayr win

MARTENSDALE — Friday’s girls basketball game was monumental for Mount Ayr’s Kelcie Shields.

The senior scored her 1,000th career point as the Raiderettes rolled to a 68-40 win at Martensdale-St. Marys.

Shields scored a game-high 20 points on 5-of-10 from the field and 10-of-11 at the free throw line. She also grabbed eight rebounds and blocked four shots.

The Raiderettes broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring the Blue Devils 21-10 in the second quarter. Mount Ayr led 33-22 at halftime.

Mount Ayr stretched the lead to 47-33 after three quarters.

“We did a lot of nice things once we got past the first quarter and got into a rhythm,” said Mount Ayr coach Thad Streit.

The Raiderette defense settled in nicely after the first quarter.

“We made a few defensive adjustments and created a lot more on offense,” Streit said.

The combination of solid offense and steady defense created a fun game for Mount Ayr patrons to watch.

“We were fun to watch once we got rolling,” Streit said.

Tess Shields scored 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Megan Warin scored 14 points and dished out five assists.

McElfish’s big night leads NV

GREENFIELD — Paige McElfish reached a career milestone Friday as Nodaway Valley’s girls basketball team opened the 2017 portion of the schedule with an easy win over Pleasantville in Pride of Iowa Conference play.

McElfish reached the 1,000-point plateau. She’s the second Nodaway Valley player to reach the mark recently, joining teammate and classmate Josie Clarke in reaching the accomplishment.

It was a big night for McElfish. She poured in a game-high 31 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out four assists.

“Paige really stepped up aggressively attacking the basket,” said Nodaway Valley coach Tom Thompson. “Double-doubles are the norm for her. It was great to see her reach 1,000.”

Clarke added 12 points and blocked two shots.

The Wolverines picked up key contributions from a couple of younger players.

“We got excellent bench play from Riley Lonsdale and Natalie Daugherty as well as some freshmen,” Thompson said.

Nodaway Valley seized control right away. The Wolverines led 26-2 after one quarter and 40-3 at halftime.

Defense set the tone for the Wolverines.

“Our pressure in the first quarter really helped us mentally focus on the game,” Thompson said. “Once we got some easy baskets, our offense started to flow better.”

Murray caps busy week with win

MURRAY — Murray’s girls basketball team ended the week with a solid 55-30 home win Friday over Lamoni in Bluegrass Conference basketball.

Murray led 17-8 after one quarter and 32-20 at halftime. The Lady Mustangs outscored the Demons 15-4 in the third quarter, taking a 47-24 lead after three quarters.

Finding enough energy was a challenge for the Lady Mustangs, playing their third game in four days.

“We had to really play through some tough times of having tired legs by going back-to-back nights,” said Murray coach Jerry Shields. “We got out and finished with some good run outs.”

Bre Klein and Kayla Wookey each scored 13 points. Katie Otto added 11 points and eight rebounds. Brandi Gilbert chipped in with eight points..

Murray (8-2, 4-1) is at Seymour Tuesday.

I-35 downs Lenox

TRURO — Lenox played some of its best team basketball of the season according coach Clay Nelson, but it wasn’t enough in a 63-17 loss at Interstate 35 Friday in Pride of Iowa Conference girls basketball.

The Tigers fell behind 18-0 after the first quarter.

Kayla Yzaguirre provided the Tigers’ first five points in the second quarter.

“Except for shooting, that’s the best we’ve played all year as a team,” Nelson said.

The effort of all who played was the most consistent the Tigers have had this season.

“We’ve had one play good or two play good, but we’ve never played as a team,” Nelson said. “There were spots in the game where we were reckless, but we settled down. We’ve never been able to do that before.”

The Tigers had 20 turnovers, but Nelson attributed that to the size the Roadruners utilized on their press, led by Creighton recruit Gracey Griglione.

Jessica Anderson led the Tigers with nine points. Jacy Stoaks had six rebounds.

Slye Richardson led Interstate 35 with 20 points. Griglione added 17 and 10 rebounds.

UP NEXT — Lenox (2-8) hosts Class 2A fifth-ranked Mount Ayr (10-0) Tuesday.

SW Valley tops Wayne

CORNING — Southwest Valley started strong in the first half, leading to a 62-52 win over Wayne Friday in Pride of Iowa girls basketball.

Southwest Valley led 18-15 after one quarter and 39-28 halftime.

A trio led the way for the Timberwolves. Danica Sunderman had 18 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Jentry Schafer had 18 points and eight rebounds. Morgan Shuey had 17 points and and 10 rebounds.

Wayne trimmed the lead to 48-41 after three quarters, but Southwest Valley edged away in the fourth.

UP NEXT — Southwest Valley (4-6) is at East Union Tuesday and at Stanton Thursday.
