Friends of the Library

Friends of the Library (FOL) met Dec. 19 at the library with the following members present: Emily Cook, Cari Jack, Kay Raymond, Julie Schieffer, Karen Walter, Ann Coulter and David Hargrove. New members Maureen Bolinger and Barbara Thomsen were welcomed to the board.

There was an addition to the agenda and the minutes of the last meeting were approved as written.

Coulter, Board of Trustees president, reported there needs to be one more person added to the Board of Trustees and this person needs to be a male.

The mystery “Save the Star Crossed Lovers’ will be held 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12. Cost is $25 per person or $100 for a team of five people. Participants will be wandering through the library trying to solve the mystery. Donor packets are close to being ready. Hargrove, library director, mentioned Kelly Franklin of Southwestern Community College wrote the play for the February mystery. She and Hargrove will be on Grapevine together and Hargrove will promote the play in his newspaper column.

The huge TV has been installed upstairs and there will be a mobile TV downstairs. Haley Jones is finishing up the LEGO Club and the library will host her robotics programming. Hargrove has finished the annual survey. Hargrove has also shifted the audio and large-print books to make more room for growth. The newspapers will be moved downstairs so all periodicals will be together. This will give room for adult fiction. Hargrove’s goal is to get the library as comfortable as possible with its limited space.

The treasurer’s report was placed on file for audit. A check was written for $80 to Connie Thompson for Mr. and Mrs. Claus and for the gambling license for $155. Walter, Judy Hoakison and Starr Cure will prepare the audit.

Correspondence was from Ben Adamson, Discovery Kids Preschool and the Emmaus group of First United Methodist Church.

FOL moved to donate $10,000 to the capital campaign renovation fund project this December.

Photos with Santa went fine.

Scrapbooking forms are coming in. FOL needs silent auction items. FOL will provide lunch and dinner Saturday and lunch on Sunday. The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, and from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, at Quilts and Other Notions.

The next meeting will be 6 p.m. Jan. 16.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Dec. 28.

Canasta winners were Joan Chubick, first; Mary Kline, second; and Linda Clark, third.

Kline won the door prize.

Wanda Nash will host cards and chatter Wednesday, Jan. 4.

Creston United Methodist Women News

The Creston United Methodist Women Executive Committee met 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, in Fellowship Hall. There were seven officers and the special events coordinator in attendance. Susan Weight presided. The UMW Purpose was recited together, and joys and concerns were shared. Beth Perry led devotions with an excerpt from a Christmas letter, a scripture and a prayer.

Minutes from the November meeting were reviewed and approved. The treasurer’s report was given and approved.

Vice President Ann Driskell thanked those who helped clean the kitchen and said next year’s program booklets are nearly complete.

Program resources received books on spiritual growth and social action.

In old business, a motion was made to purchase a 10-inch-tall electric can opener. Motion will be presented to the unit meeting.

In new business, Pastor Jodi asked the UMW to prepare goody bags for the children to have Dec. 18 after their Sunday School Christmas program. There will be 25 bags made.

Meeting was adjourned with everyone reciting the December Bible verse – Luke 2:30-40.

The unit meeting met directly after executive. Weight presided. Perry had the devotions and read scripture from Luke, a poem from the Response Magazine and closed with a prayer.

Minutes of the September unit meeting were read. Roll call was answered by five members of Morning Circle and six members of Evening Circle. Business was the same as executive.

Driskell was in charge of the program entitled “History of Christmas Carols.” She presented information on several carols and the meaning of “the 12 days of Christmas.”

Refreshments were served by Morning Circle.

Morning Circle met 9:30 a.m. Dec. 15. Ellen Rinner was hostess and Velma Riegel presided. This was a social meeting and there was no program.

Evening Circle met 6:30 p.m. Dec. 15 at Kay Ritter’s for a salad supper. This was a social meeting and there was no program or business transacted.

Beta Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma

Beta Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International met the morning of Dec. 10 at the home of Karen Tussey with 10 members and one guest present. Members answered roll call by recalling a special food they associate with Christmas.

Diane Burgmaier read correspondence from Mary Overholtzer of Winterset Junior High and from the staff of Nodaway Valley’s Middle School thanking the chapter for the cookies sent for the teachers. Peggy Rupe sent a thank you for remembering her at the time of her husband’s death. A note was received from Pam Wittkamp, Upsilon state president, thanking the members for their part in the president’s meeting in October.

Tussey led the discussion reviewing of the next section of chapter rules. Two recommendations for membership were read. The second reading and vote will take place at the April meeting. Members were reminded that nominations for the chapter’s Excellence in Teaching Award should be sent to Julie Derby. Derby appointed an ad hoc committee of Lois Frederick and Karen Tussey to evaluate the nominations to determine the award recipients.

Members signed Christmas cards which will be sent to this year’s World Fellowship students. The Upsilon State Convention is June 9-11 in Mason City. Early registration is due by April 26. The next chapter meeting will be 6:15 p.m. Monday, April 3, at Winterset Public Library. After the potluck supper, a program honoring our men and women in the military will be presented.

This program was led by Mary McColloch, as she taught the members in attendance to weave a basket which they were able to take home.

Elzevir Reading Circle

Elzevir Reading Circle met Dec. 9 at the home of Mary Burg. The group enjoyed a salad luncheon. After playing a couple Christmas-themed games provided by the hostess, the meeting was opened informally by President Linda Topliff.

In the absence of the secretary, Terry Ammon took roll call with four members sharing their Christmas plans.

Topliff provided the list of suggested books to assist in reading selections this year.

The circle continued a tabled discussion from the November meeting. A decision was made to give money to the library and Christmas basket fund sponsored by Creston News Advertiser. Burg gave the treasurer’s report. She will disperse $50, the club’s share of the General Federated Women’s Club Scholarship, for a Creston High School senior.

After a tour of Burg’s home, the meeting adjourned with wishing each other well in the coming year.

The next regular meeting will be 12:30 p.m. Jan. 13 at the home of Kay Ritter for an anniversary luncheon.
