Mount Ayr 35, Nodaway Valley 33

MOUNT AYR — A big defensive third-quarter helped propel the Class 2A fifth-ranked Mount Ayr Raiderettes to a 35-33 win over visiting Nodaway Valley Tuesday in a battle of undefeated teams.

Kelcie Shields scored 10 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked five shots.

Macy Larsen and Tess Shields scored seven apiece to propel Mount Ayr to victory.

The Raiderettes overcame 21 turnovers to Nodaway Valley’s 10 as the Wolverines shot just 29 percent from the floor.

“It was a defensive battle, and our defense won the game for us in the second half,” Mount Ayr coach Thad Streit said. “We got some big stops and slow them down in the 2nd half. We have a big game on Friday and we need to be more efficient on offense to get a win.”

Josie Clarke scored 12 to lead the Wolverines. Paige McElfish scored eight points, grabbed nine rebounds, had three assists, three steals and two blocks.

UP NEXT — Mount Ayr (6-0) hosts Interstate 35 Friday at 6:15 p.m.

Nodaway Valley (5-1) plays at Martensdale St. Marys (4-4) Friday at 6:15 p.m.

SW Valley 54,

Lenox 32

LENOX — Southwest Valley pulled out a strong road win at Lenox Tuesday 54-32.

The Timberwolves plucked away 17 steals.

Morgan Shuey scored 22 points. Danica Sunderman scored seven. Both Hailey Thomas and Jentry Schafer accounted for six points each.

“Overall the effort was outstanding and our defense was very good,” Southwest Valley coach Allen Naugle said. “We were able to create a lot of turnovers and were able to get good shots in the lane.”

UP NEXT —Southwest Valley (2-5) travels to Liberty Center for a game at Southeast Warren (3-5) Thursday at 6:15 p.m.

Nodaway Valley 42, SW Valley 17

GREENFIELD — Paige McElfish had a triple-double and Nodaway Valley held the visiting Southwest Valley Timberwolves scoreless in the second quarter, and under 10 in each period as the Wolverines earned a 42-17 win Friday.

McElfish scored 20 points, pulled down a school-record 21 rebounds and stole the ball 10 times in the win.

Josie Clarke kicked in 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. She also blocked three shots.

“We just really struggled to find ways to score the entire game,” Southwest Valley coach Allen Naugle said. “Defensively we did a great job the entire game. We really worked hard all night to stop their posts from scoring and I thought we did very well.”

Morgan Shuey and Danica Sunderman scored six each for Southwest Valley.

Mount Ayr 74,

Bedford 37

BEDFORD —Megan Warrin led the way with a 23-point, 6-steal, 5-assist performance in a 74-37 win at Bedford Friday.

Kelcie Shields (12), Tess Shields (10), and Macy Larsen (10) helped lead the Raiderettes.

“We got off to a slow start and finally got into a groove and played some good ball the last 10 minutes of the game,” Mount Ayr coach Thad Streit said. “I think the girls were trying to hard and didn’t have much flow during the game.”

East Union 38, Lenox 36

AFTON — East Union earned its first win since Dec. 12, 2014 (a 38-37 win over Lenox) with a similar 38-36 home win over Lenox Friday.

Sidney McFee carried the load with 12 points and 16 rebounds.

Callie Gossman scored eight points while adding four assists, four rebounds and four steals.

Mara Weis and Olivia Eckels both had six points.

UP NEXT — East Union hosts Moravia (2-3) at 6:15 Thursday.

BLUEGRASS

Murray 53, Twin Cedars 10

BUSSEY — The Murray Lady Mustangs held winless Twin Cedars to 10 points in Bussey Friday in a 53-10 win.

The Lady Mustangs put on a passing display with 22 assists.

Bre Klein scored 10 points, four assists and five steals in the win.

Zadie Hatfield scored eight points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

UP NEXT — Murray (4-1) heads to Lenox (2-4) for a game at 6:15 Thursday.

Grand View Christian 64, Orient-Macksburg 28

DES MOINES — Megan Stubbs scored most of her 36 points in the first half as Grand View Christian Academy scored a 64-28 win over Orient-Macksburg at home Friday.

Katie Walter’s 12 points led the Bulldogs in the loss.

Seymour 68, Orient-Macksburg 22

SEYMOUR — Orient-Macksburg struggled offensively in a road loss to Seymour Saturday, 68-22.

Katie Walter scored seven, while Kaela Eslinger and Brooklyn Sammons both talied four points.

Orient-Macksburg 42, Iowa Christian Academy 27

ORIENT — Two Bulldogs went into double figures as Orient-Macksburg earned its second win of the year in a 42-27 home victory over Iowa Christian Academy Tuesday.

Katie Walter posted 16 points, a high for any Bulldog player in a game this year. Brooklyn Sammons added 10 points, and Kaela Eslinger scored eight.
