Kent Dinner Club

Kent Dinner Club met Oct. 13 with 11 attending.

Next meeting will be 5:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at Pizza Ranch.

CARSPA

CARSPA (Creston Area Retired School Personnel Association) held its meeting Oct. 11 at the Del Richardson Conference Room at Greater Regional Medical Center.

Following breakfast, 12 members enjoyed a presentation on “Organic Foods, Farming and Sales” by Dale Raasch of Bridgewater. A wide variety of produce is grown organically on the farm owned and operated by Raasch and his son, Tyler. The products are sold locally at Fareway and Hy-Vee, as well as at other area and distant stores and farmers markets. Organic farming takes extra work, but the results have added nutritional value and flavor.

A business meeting followed. Members’ monetary contribution of $20 was collected and donated to Creston Elementary School to be used by the school nurse in assisting a family or families to meet the personal needs of their children. Members are encouraged to attend a Veteran’s Day program near them in November. The next meeting will be Jan. 10.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Oct. 19.

Canasta winners were Wanda Nash, first; Marilyn Larimore, second; and Gwen Sandeman, third.

Nash won the door prize.

Linda Clark will host cards and chatter Wednesday, Oct. 26.

GRMC Auxillary Board

On Oct. 10, Nancy called the meeting to order with Ann, Carolyn, Bev, Martha, Lois, Jessica, Joan and Rhonda in attendance. Minutes and financial reports were discussed and approved. The Collective Goods sale and estate jewelry sale were successful. A thank you card will be sent to the donor of the jewelry.

Upcoming fundraisers are the purse sale Nov. 1 and masquerade jewelry sale Dec. 15. The earliest date available for the scratch cupcake fundraiser is October 2018. Payroll deductions due to fundraising vendors will now be paid to the auxiliary to be forwarded to the vendor.

Other business is Sandy Krauth has agreed to join the board and will be invited to the Christmas meeting. Lights for Loved Ones snowflakes will be hung the week before Thanksgiving. Twenty new snowflakes are needed as are new batteries for all the snowflakes. The bloodmobile is slated for Nov. 7. The next meeting is Nov. 14.

CEO Monte Neitzel reported during August the Urgent Care Clinic was seeing about 130 patients per week. He also noted construction plans are being finalized for moving in-house staff, including ENT and X-ray plus an audiologist, to the present specialty clinic.

Neitzel announced PA Katie Lenhart has joined Darcy Rubenking at the Lenox Clinic. Dr. Lonnie Miller is the medical director.

Neitzel said the GRMC Foundation is looking at the construction of a healing garden near the north entrance to the hospital. This may be an enclosed area opening onto a garden path with plantings, benches and perhaps a water feature. He said this would be beneficial to patients and their loved ones during stressful times at hospital. Neitzel said GRMC is always looking for new ways to improve services provided.

GRMC Auxillary Gift Shop

On Oct. 10, Joan directed the meeting of GRMC Aulliary Gift Shop buyers with Lois, Jessica, Nancy and Rhonda present. Minutes, the financial report and purchases recently received and those made for the future were reviewed and approved.

Other business included:

• Kay Ritter will be a new gift shop volunteer

• Christmas work days will be Nov. 13-14

• Christmas Open House will be Nov. 15

• Demdaco has recalled their scented pillows

• the ISU and IOWA totes were not on the invoice

• grab bags will be set up Oct. 13

Next meeting will be Nov. 14.

Alpha Sigma Master

Alpha Sigma Master chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Oct. 13 with Martha McAuley as hostess. Members answered roll call by telling their favorite season of the year. Cheryl McClure presided. She reviewed member status requirements.

Marilyn Larimore, service chairman, announced plans for conducting an activity Oct. 25 at Homestead Assisted Living, assisting residents with making Halloween decorations.

McAuley’s program was about the USS Iowa battleship, which is now preserved as a museum in the port of Los Angeles. The ship was launched in 1942 and finally mothballed in 1990. It saw service in World War II, Korea and Persian Gulf conflicts. The state of Iowa donated funds for its preservation, and Iowans are admitted free to tour the ship. Loretta Kelly assisted McAuley with the program and told about her visit to the ship soon after it was opened as a museum.

The hostess served seasonal refreshments during social time.

TOPS #IA 1338

Ten members of TOPS #IA 1338 answered roll call Oct. 10 with leader Shellie Adams calling the meeting to order.

Adams was the best loser and the runner-up was Anna Thompson. Minutes were read by Bev Roberts and Alice Brown gave the treasurer’s report. Fines for Oct. 3 went to the treasury.

Squares contest went to Brown. Red Can Challenge was to not “eat it if you can’t wash it” for one meal a day. The program was a round-table discussion on pitfalls of halloween candy displays plus Trick or Treat visits. Many ideas were shared to help each other.

Adams called the meeting to order Oct. 17 with 10 members weighing in. Roberts was the best lsoer and Adams was second. Net loss was 17 3/4 pounds for the week.

Brown gave the treasuer’s report and Roberts read the minutes. Both were approved.

Squares went to Roberts and Adams received the fines from Oct. 10. Roberts gave the program on 100 diet tricks such as brushing your teeth after dinner to keep from snacking before bed. If you’re not hungry enough to eat an apple, you’re not hungry. Thompson will give the program Oct. 24.

The Red Can Challenge is to list food intake for two days. The meeting adjourned at 6 p.m.

Visitors are welcome to attend a meeting Mondays at First United Methodist Church in Creston. TOPS meet to weigh in at 5 p.m. and the meeting starts at 5:30 p.m.

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, Oct 18, at the Windrow meeting room with 23 members and one guest. President Chris Eaton presided, Jim Morris gave the prayer and Jamie Travis was the finemaster.

The program was given by Skip Kenyon, president of Iowa State Bar Association. He discussed the judicial retention election, which is held every six years. Iowa is one of only 13 states that do this type of election.

The annual fresh evergreen decorated wreaths and sprays sale for the holiday season has started. There are two sizes of decorated wreaths and one balsam spray for sale this year. All members have order sheets. More details and photos may be found on the Kiwanis Club of Creston, Iowa Facebook page.

The club will hold its annual children’s winter coat distribution from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at First United Methodist Church in Creston.

St. John’s Women’s Evening Fellowship

St. John’s United Church of Christ Women’s Evening Fellowship met Oct. 10 with 12 members present.

Devotions were given by Connie Loomis and the Least Coin was collected. President Tammy Willets conducted the business meeting. Plans for the upcoming Oct. 24 soup supper were discussed. Delores Doench discussed the progress of United Charitable Organizations future plans.

Raffle tickets were given out to members to sell on a 53- by 63-inch quilted Christmas quilt sewed by Mary Burg. It was noted the dirt work around the church has been completed and grass seed has been sewn. The trivia question was answered by Sharon Gile. Refreshments were served by Loomis and Joyce Clark.

The next meeting will be Nov. 14.
