Herdsmanship award given to Union County Highland Highlights 4-H Club

Highland Highlights 4-H Club was the winner of the herdsmanship award at the 2016 Union County Fair.

The club celebrated its title at the September and October meetings with a free pizza party sponsored by the local Friends of 4-H Foundation. The club members were also awarded purple herdsmanship ribbons and a traveling plaque which is on display at the county extension office. Highland Highlights is made up of 60 members, led by April Evans and Karen Loudon.

Herdsmanship focuses on teamwork, showing pride in exhibits, learning to pick up and take care of the area and proper care and treatment of the animal (feed, water, animal and pens clean and animal health). Ten 4-H clubs and two FFA chapters in Union County were judged two times each day during five days of the county fair. The judging was done by volunteers in the community. They walked through each of the barns and scored the clubs based on a score sheet.

It was a close contest with three clubs finishing strong. Highland Highlights finished out with a score of 17.20/20, Douglas Boosters came in a close second with a final score of 16.20/20 and Sand Creek Pioneers finished in third place with a score of 16.0/20.
